STUDENTS NEEDED TO CORRECT CARDS during class or for homework. I will GRADE whether all steps are done correctly on last night's cards and future cards. III. We discussed TONIGHT's words from the story "Seventh Grade", "conviction" and "ferocity". FOR QUIZ to come: Know that conviction and ferocity are ABSTRACT nouns, which means they are "idea" nouns, not "person, place or thing" nouns. THey can be difficult to use CORRECTLY for some students. If your sentence sounds awkward, try pairing the word with "with" or "Show, shows, showing" This trick works with most abstract nouns that are the noun form of a word that is related to an adjective or verb root. "The lion showed ferocity." "The teacher slammed the door with ferocity." "The student argued with conviction. " "He showed strong conviction in the idea that free speech is essential for all people when he let a student criticize him." You may not use these sentences in your homework Know that ITY and TION are common endings that signal a word is a noun. EXAMPLE: ferocity is the noun form of the ADJ "ferocious" (the ending "ity" is a clue that the word is a noun.) (other adjectives that end in ous, that become nouns with "ity" include monstrous (adj) >>> monstocity(noun) atrocious >>>>>atrocity conviction is the noun form of the verb "to convince" (other words that end in tion that are related to verbs are: election is the noun form of the verb "to elect" prevention is the noun form of the verb "to pretend"
