ELA Class Review
Homework checked for all but green class-which did not meet due
to pictures.
I. Yellow and Red classes made arguments for class names.
FOR NEXT QUIZ: you need to know the THREE ingredients
to a proper argument (known as the "Rhetorical Triangle")
Appeal to HEAD: use logical evidence, examples, facts
Appeal to HEART: use emotion, try to make listener FEEL
something
Correct TONE: Write or speak with CONVICTION, be
trustworthy, believable, choose "right" words for audience
Yellow class chose Yellow Yorkies--any class member who
wants to design a class logo will receive EXTRA CREDIT and
the undying affections of your peers.
Red class TIED--3 ways---must have been some persuasive
arguments. Show down tomorrow for Rhinos, Roses, and
Raccoons.
II. Vocabulary Card review
We looked at samples of last night's homework on the
words scowl and elective using projector. We showed some
common errors that you should correct tonight and in future
vocabulary homework.
COMPLETE directions--with EVERY POSSIBLE direction to
clarify ANY question you might have are readable and
printable from the Handouts icon.
Some students have already used the on-line template to do the
work on the computer. If it makes the work more interesting
and you prefer using the color and clipart options, do the work
on your computer.
Most common errors to correct:
Do each word on SEPARATE sheet or card. We will use these
in games with partners.
Copy sentences EXACTLY as they appear in text. NO
spelling errors, PROPER capitalization. Period at end of
sentence.
Put quotation marks around sentence you copy.
Write sentences clearly because we are going to mark these up
to examine grammar in class.
Include PAGE #.
WRITE YOUR OWN SENTENCE TOO!
Color -code (see instructions in handouts for colors I will use
all year.
LEAVE SPACE in definition box for us to add on and
paraphrase in class.
STUDENTS NEEDED TO CORRECT CARDS during class or for
homework. I will GRADE whether all steps are done correctly on
last night's cards and future cards.
III. We discussed TONIGHT's words from the story "Seventh
Grade", "conviction" and "ferocity".
FOR QUIZ to come: Know that conviction and ferocity are
ABSTRACT nouns, which means they are "idea" nouns, not
"person, place or thing" nouns. THey can be difficult to use
CORRECTLY for some students. If your sentence sounds
awkward, try pairing the word with "with" or "Show, shows,
showing" This trick works with most abstract nouns that are the
noun form of a word that is related to an adjective or verb root.
"The lion showed ferocity." "The teacher slammed the door with
ferocity." "The student argued with conviction. " "He
showed strong conviction in the idea that free speech is essential
for all people when he let a student criticize him."
You may not use these sentences in your homework
Know that ITY and TION are common endings that signal a
word is a noun.
EXAMPLE: ferocity is the noun form of the ADJ "ferocious"
(the ending "ity" is a clue that the word is a noun.)
(other adjectives that end in ous, that become
nouns with "ity" include
monstrous (adj) >>> monstocity(noun)
atrocious >>>>>atrocity
conviction is the noun form of the verb "to
convince"
(other words that end in tion that are related to
verbs are:
election is the noun form of the verb "to elect"
prevention is the noun form of the verb "to
pretend"
