Members of our parish visited many of her sites in 2013, including her burial place at the beautiful convent of Bodbe. According to tradition, St. Nino was born in Cappadocia, the daughter of Zebulon, a Roman General, and Sosanna, sister of the Patriarch of Jerusalem. When she was fourteen years old, St. Nino witnessed an appearance by the Theotokos, who announced St. Nino’s important destiny: to preach the True Faith in the Virgin’s chosen land of Iberia (Georgia). The Mother of God gave her a cross made of grapevine branches of, which St. Nino bound with her hair. She endured many hardships on her journey. When St. Nino arrived in Georgia, she made her home beneath a bramble bush in the garden of the king. The gardener and his wife were childless, but through St. Nino’s prayers God granted them a child. The couple rejoiced, declaring Christ to be the True God; they became disciples of St. Nino. Wherever St. Nino went, those who heard her preach converted to the Christian faith. St. Nino healed the terminally ill Queen Nana after she declared Christ to be the True God. King Mirian, a pagan, was not pleased with the effect St. Nino’s preaching had on the Georgian nation, and he resolved to kill all those who followed Christ. However, in the midst of a hunt, the King was suddenly confronted with darkness. All alone, King Mirian became greatly afraid and prayed in vain for the help of the pagan gods. When his prayers went unanswered, he finally turned to Christ: “God of Nino, illumine this night for me and guide my footsteps, and I will declare Thy Holy Name. I will erect a cross and venerate it and I will construct for Thee a temple. I vow to be obedient to Nino and to the Faith of the Roman people!” Immediately the night was transfigured, the sun shone radiantly, and King Mirian gave thanks to the Creator. When he returned to the city, he immediately informed St. Nino of his decision. As a result of the unceasing labors of Equal-to-the-Apostles Nino, Georgia was established as a nation solidly rooted in the Christian Faith. We must not approach Christ out of fear of how we will die and of what will become of us. Rather, we must open our hearts to Him, as when we tug at a window curtain and the sun immediately shines in. In this way Christ will come to us, that we might truly love Him. This is the best way. +Elder Porphyrios of Kafsokalyvia Holy Trinity Orthodox Church Parish Council Senior Warden - Suzette Eremin Treasurer - Niki Barna Secretary - Carol Wetmore Eugene Bohensky George Bohensky Peter Dardaganis Junior Warden - William Cullinan Financial Secretary - John Babiak Brian Farbanish Marissa Hedge Drew Krause Sandra Masklee St. Nino, Equal-to-the-Apostles and Enlightener of Georgia Rev.
