THORNLEIGH SALESIAN COLLEGE Admissions Policy for September 2012 1 The Governing Body of Thornleigh Salesian College is responsible for admissions. The school’s capacity number for September 2012 Year 7 entry is 230. 2 Thornleigh Salesian College’s associated RC Primary Schools are as follows: St Brendan’s (Harwood), St Columba’s (Tonge Moor), Holy Infant’s (Astley Bridge), St John’s (Bromley Cross), St Joseph’s (Halliwell), St Osmund’s and St Andrew’s (Breightmet), and St Thomas of Canterbury (Heaton). Thornleigh Salesian College’s nominated parishes are as follows: St Brendan’s (Harwood), St Columba’s (Tonge Moor), St Edmund’s (Bolton), Holy Infant’s (Astley Bridge), St James the Great (Montserrat), St John’s (Bromley Cross), St Joseph’s (Halliwell), St Osmund’s (Breightmet), and St Thomas of Canterbury (Heaton). 3 Allocation will be in accordance with parental preference as far as possible. The limitations on this will be those provided for by Section 86(2) of the Education Act 1998, which states that an authority need not comply with the parental preference for reasons which include: where to admit the child would prejudice the provision of efficient education or the efficient use of resources; where the child has been permanently excluded from two or more schools. It is obviously inefficient to have first year groups at one school overcrowded while other schools have spare places. 4 Where demand for places at Thornleigh Salesian College exceeds the available places, admission to the school will be made in accordance with the following criteria in order of priority: a) Roman Catholic children who are looked after children. b) Roman Catholic children who live in a nominated parish and attend an associated primary school. c) Roman Catholic children who live in a nominated parish, and who attend a Roman Catholic primary school. d) Roman Catholic children who attend an associated primary school. e) Roman Catholic children who have a sister or brother in the school at the time of admission, and who attend a Roman Catholic primary school. f) Roman Catholic children who live in a nominated parish, and who attend a non-Roman Catholic primary school. Admissions Policy 2012-06.11-SEnglish g) Roman Catholic children who attend a Roman Catholic primary school. h) Roman Catholic children who attend a non-Roman Catholic primary school. i) Other children who are looked after j) Other children in associated RC Primary School. k) Other children with brother/sister at Thornleigh at the time of admission. l) Other children. 5 The sibling link in categories (e) and (k) above does not apply if the older child is in the Sixth Form and has transferred after Year 11 from either of the Roman Catholic 11-16 schools in the Bolton LA. 6 Decisions on admission to the school in Year 7 for September 2012 will be made in accordance with the above criteria. Late applications will be considered in the light of whether any places remain available. 7 If in any category there are more applications than places available, priority will be given on the basis of proximity to the school. The shortest walking distance from the front door of the applicant’s address to the main entrance door of the school by the safest route will be the deciding factor in these cases. Parents who change address before their child takes up the place allocated, and who would consequently prefer a different school, should inform the Department of Education and Arts immediately. If the move has not been completed, supporting evidence such as a solicitor’s letter or a letter from the Housing Department will be needed. 8 Sixth Form Admissions Existing students who have completed Year 11 at Thornleigh Salesian College and who wish to join the Associated Sixth Form, will be offered a place provided that an appropriate course is available and the student meets the requisite entry criteria for the course, as specified in the course prospectus. Students will receive comprehensive information and guidance (IAG) on the most appropriate courses available to them. External Students Places will be offered to external candidates subject to an appropriate course being available and the student meeting the requisite entry criteria for the course, as specified in the course prospectus. Notes: (1) A ‘Roman Catholic’ child is one who has been baptised in a Roman Catholic church or who has been subsequently received into the Roman Catholic Church. (2) The Governors accept that in some family units (1 or 2 adults and children) the children may not be natural brothers and/or sisters. Older children can be considered to ‘qualify’ a younger child under the sibling link in priorities 4(e) and 4(k) of the criteria provided proof is available to demonstrate that the children are permanently resident at the same address and part of the same family unit.
