2011 Arts Intersession Class Offerings Session A is from 8am-10am; Session B is from 10:15-12:15. School is dismissed at 12:30. See direction for class selection on page 4 4-Layer Drawing: Session A or Session B Student Travis Wood from Greenville Tech will teach students how to use a variety of mediums to create a unique, layered piece of art work. This class is a sampling of the foundation design course that examines the principles, theory, techniques and materials of three-dimensional form, space and structure. Archery: Session B Are you a toxophilite? Join Principal Bill Roach and see if you possess this ancient skill. Archery has historically been used for hunting and combat; in modern times, however, its main use is that of a recreational activity. One who practices archery is typically known as an "archer" or "bowman," and one who is fond of, or an expert at, archery can be referred to as a "toxophilite." Learn the proper techniques and safe practices while testing your skill. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Session A or Session B Just like the popular TV show! Contestants attempt to answer ten questions plus a final bonus question. Content is taken from elementary school textbooks, two from each grade level from first to fifth. Each correct answer increases the “prize”. Are YOU smarter than a 5th grader? Find out in this fun class led by Math teacher Leeann Lewis! (Auto) Mechanics Illustrated: Session B only Join parent Tim Jacobs at his garage for a hands-on auto care experience. You will learn the basics of caring for the 4 wheels you rely on so much. You can save thousands of dollars over the course of your life by tending to basic car maintenance yourself. **Students will need to provide their own transportation to the garage which is 10 minutes from the school on Sandy Flat Road. Beading/Jewelry Making: Session B only Students will learn the basics of hardwiring tools and techniques for turning decorative beads into fashionable items to wear! Book Study: Session A only Taught by Pastor Seth Starkey, of Second Presbyterian Church. This intensive study will cover a popular topic and lead to many interesting intellectual discussions. Pastor Seth will supply the name of the book to class attendees. Box Camera Project: Session A or Session B Rob McConnell will lead you in the construction of a real, working camera. Find out how simple objects can be turned in to useful, creative tools! You and your family will be amazed when you present the photos you have created. Cake Decorating: Session A or Session B Learn the how’s and why’s of creating beautiful, (even healthy) treats to consume! Entice your family and friends with beautiful, edible sweets! Decorated cupcakes will be sold each day after class. Proceeds to benefit the AI program. Chinese 101: Session A only Parent Judy Robertson will introduce you to the mystery of China through their language. Learn interesting aspects of Chinese life and the beauty of their written word. 1 Culinary Arts: Session A only Students will learn the basics of culinary art skills from GMC mom, Juanita Cowden. Learn some tricks to making your tummy a happy place! Cuisine of Spain: Session B only Join Spanish teachers Ms. Berkland and Ms. Gonzalez in the making of foods native to Chile, Spain and Mexico! See how each culture uses the same ingredients to make foods unique to their country. Each day you will sample a dish native to one country. Dance 101: Sessions A or B Do you like to dance already? Would you like to learn to dance? Then here is the class for you! Dance 101 will introduce you to three styles: Contra, Waltz and Swing. Elements of Music: Session A only Taught by Dr. White from Greenville Tech. This course is an introduction to the study of music with focus on the elements of music and their relationships, the musical characteristics of representative works and composers, genres and styles. Floral Design: Session A only Meet the florists of Barrett’s Flowers, Bloom (GMC Jumper family) and Publix (GMC Grande family) to learn what goes in to creating beautiful arrangements. If you enjoy decorating, then you will love this class. Impress your family! Interior Decorating: Session A only Interior Decorator, Lauren, from A Smart Fabrics will be on site to teach you the elements of room design and decoration. Follow your creative spirit and see what you can accomplish in three sessions! You will go home inspired. Masterpiece Class: Session A only From drawing to sculpting to painting you will use and explore multi dimensional mediums in this class. Taught by local Travelers Rest art studio teacher, Angela Anderson. Music Recording Studio: Note: this is a 12 hour class which covers both sessions. Are you a fan of music? Want to write, sing, or play your own music? Come to the recording studio to jumpstart your dream of being a rock star. This class will be taught by parent Dell Barkley. Painting: Session A or Session B Artist Melissa Gresham will be teaching Vincent Van Gogh's “The Starry Night”. The students will learn about Van Gogh and this famous painting. Students don't have to know how to draw to take this class and you will be very surprised by what you create! Paper Arts I: Session A only Stamping is a craft in which some type of ink made of dye or pigment is applied to an image or pattern that has been carved, molded, laser engraved or vulcanized, onto a sheet of rubber. Stamping can really bring out the creative you! Be careful, About.com says “stamping” may prove to be addictive, but we think it will be just great fun!! Many, many cute crafts can be created by this art form. Judy Bagley and Dee Jerina will be teaching the class. Paper Arts II: Session B only Taught by parent/student Team Stoddard. You will create an inspirational wall hanging using acrylics on canvas. The students will start by choosing and planning color schemes, design, and a phrase/verse and applying a base coat of background colors on the first day. You will add to the piece each day and finish with creative embellishments. 2 Photography: Session A or Session B Taught by Matt Carter from Fuzzy Bison Studios. In this class you will be introduced to the use of digital and 35 mm photography equipment and the skills in producing quality still photographs. Several areas of photography will be presented including areas that Matt utilizes in his career on a daily basis. You will need to bring a 35mm camera and film to this class. Pottery 101: Session A or Session B Student from Greenville Tech, Valli Wallace will engage you in a multisensory experience. Learn the basics of clay working, wheel throwing and firing. Wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty as you “pour” yourself in to the project! Rocketry: Session B only Science teacher Alexander George will guide students through the basics of chemistry and the physics of rocket flight and propulsion. After successful completion of the principles of rocketry and safety guidelines, students will build and launch a rocket. Qualified participants must have a B or better in their current science class and no history of disciplinary action. Songwriting/Guitar: Session A or Session B Your teacher (and Guidance Counselor Rebecca Sudduth’s nephew!) Christopher Branch, is a singer/songwriter/guitarist, born and raised in the Foothills of South Carolina. He has extensive NPR and college radio airplay. He has released several studio albums as a solo artist. His songs have been covered by many regional musicians. Christopher has served as the music minister for several churches around the Upstate. He has also been a featured speaker at many music and writers conferences, including the Foothills Writers Guild. He resides in Walhalla, SC with his wife Keri Rose and their dogs Bijou and Tilly. You will need access to a guitar or stringed instrument for this class. Still Life Drawing: Session A or Session B If we work a still life in color it can help us understand how color acts in real life, how the light bounces, and how an arrangement of colors can bring a special mood to the painting. A still life in a black and white pencil drawing can help us study shapes and see how they interact. We learn how to measure correct proportions and how they can make the difference between a good drawing and a remarkable drawing. Join local artist Drew Miller in creating a remarkable drawing. Beginners are most welcome! Theatre 101: Session A or Session B Experience an exciting form of drama that combines many aspects of the theatre! Everyone will have a chance to participate and create theatre in a non-threatening environment. Whether your interest is acting, directing, producing or set design you will have a great time in this class! Taught by BJU Theatre Department graduate Anna Hummel. Wood Carving: Session A or Session B Want to express your creativity? Some craftsmen carve wood strictly for pleasure, while others turn a tidy profit from their creations. Regardless of your purpose, there are several small projects which beginners can enjoy. Hand whittling in GMC’s “workshop” with our own Walker Gregory may be just for you! Yoga: 2 hrs, Session A only Yoga is a study of posturing and breathing techniques that help to induce relaxation. All levels of yoga will be accommodated. Classes combine the heart of yoga, meditation, pranayama, asana, and relaxation. Long pants and tucked-in short-sleeved t-shirts must be worn. Participants need to bring a yoga mat or beach towel. This class will be taught by Asa Reini’s mother, Debbie Duckett. 3 -----IMPORTANT INFORMATION-----IMPORTANT INFORMATION----Dear Parents: We have worked very hard to find wonderful artists for the Arts Intersession 2011 program and are so thankful to them for participating. GMC still needs volunteers so please email me if you can donate supplies or help organize this event. There is much to do in a short amount of time! If you have not already donated to the program, please send in $10 per student (registration fee) to cover the cost of the art supplies and a bus. Class selections will take place Wednesday December 8!! Boxes will be located in Café BLT into which students will drop their selection forms. Students who do not return their selection cards will be placed in open classes at the discretion of GMC Administration. All the signed waivers and registration fees are due on Friday December 10th to advisory teachers. Students may not participate in AI without signed waivers. Your student will select one class for Session A and one class for Session B. They will go to those same classes for all three days, Jan 4-5-6. Also include the second choice, as certain classes may fill up quicker than others. There will be no switching classes once selected, so choose carefully!!
