This is a work-based programme that provides leadership skills and an understanding of sustainable best-practice frameworks so that you can: challenge poor care develop better clinical practice create a culture of compassion. The legislation also covers advanced directives, power of attorney as well deprivation of liberty safeguards. It establishes a statutory framework for determining a person’s capacity and introduces a checklist of factors that needs to be considered when determining if care and treatment is in a person’s best interests. Leicestershire Recovery College open morning Tuesday 1 September Leicestershire Recovery College has published its Autumn term prospectus in readiness for the start of the new term on 1 September, and there are some interesting new courses available, including: Dual Diagnosis – Drugs and Alcohol and the impact on Mental Health Understanding Depression Taster session: Nature for Well-Being and Recovery Individual Learning Plan Progress Workshops – opportunities for students who have completed their first term (or more) at the college to reflect on their learning and achievements so far and set some new goals. The Recovery College (based on the Glenfield Hospital site) is available to people that access mental health services, their friends, family/carers and LPT staff, and provides a friendly, relaxed and supportive learning environment. The College is holding an open morning on Tuesday 1 September from 10am – 12pm. Everyone is welcome to come along to this informal session, where in particular you can find out more about courses that will help you to improve your Maths or English skills. Dual Diagnosis conference: Monday 24 September LPT is holding a Dual Diagnosis conference in Leicester on Thursday 24 September. It aims to bring together individuals working in the field of dual diagnosis, and will focus on recovery, emerging drugs, new psychoactive drugs, alcohol, steroids, learning disabilities and best practice models. Regional events East Midlands Transition Benchmarking Workshop: Monday 14 September A few places remain for this free workshop, hosted in collaboration with London South Bank University and Great Ormond Street Hospital. It is an opportunity for East Midlands colleagues involved in transition to take part in benchmarking and see how the transition process in their service measures up, as well as contributing to the transition benchmark project nationally helping to fashion its future development. There will also be regional/national transition updates provided by the Network. The workshop is open to any paediatric and adult clinicians caring for young people throughout the transition process, and it may also be of interest to commissioners. Festival800: A human rights festival celebrating 800 years since the signing of the Magna Carta, 28 August – 6 September, Lincoln Human rights and freedom of speech are being celebrated in Lincoln from 28 August until 6 September as part of Festival800, an artistic response to the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta. Organised on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council and Arts Council England by Cultural Solutions UK, Festival800 will be ten days of live music, comedy, spoken word, street theatre, lectures and debate. Festival800 will focus on how the Magna Carta’s powers of liberty, justice and freedom of speech have shaped today’s society. Performing and speaking at the event will be acclaimed musicians Billy Bragg and the Levellers, alongside Sheila McCauley Keys (the niece of civil rights activist Rosa Parks), Eva Clarke, the youngest known survivor of the Holocaust and Ramy Essam, who was beaten, tortured and blacklisted in Egypt for being one of the face’s of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. Mental health - the five year plan conference: Wednesday 23 September Mental Health: The Five Year Plan conference is an opportunity to explore the key actions that can drive transformation and sustainability in mental health services. Some expert speakers have been lined up to explain how current demands can be mitigated, highlighting the new models of working and how these can be applied in practice. The conference will also provide opportunities for networking and knowledge sharing with fellow professionals to develop strategies which can be applied in developing and enhancing care models. The conference is taking place on Wednesday 23 September at the America Square conference centre in London. Free innovation showcase event: 7th October, Cambridge The Innovation Showcase is an event run by Health Enterprise East that focuses on realising innovation the NHS, and is being held in the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, just south of Cambridge. The line-up of keynote speakers for the day is currently being finalised, but the event will be hosted by journalist, multi-media producer and broadcaster, Vivienne Perry OBE. The day will run from 10am – 4pm and will include an exhibition showcasing innovations from 35 NHS trusts (including LPT). There will also be two breakout sessions during the day on IP Development and Funding, and Research Development and Commercialisation. In addition, Dr Helen Firth, consultant clinical geneticist at the Genome Campus, will speak about some of the work currently being carried out there. At the end of the day there will be a small awards ceremony recognising the Innovation Voucher Competition followed by a drinks reception. National Autistic Society conference: How to talk confidently to young people and adults with autism about relationships and puberty: 13th October, Birmingham This conference, taking place on 13th October in Birmingham, is designed to give delegates tools and strategies to use at home, in the classroom or in other learning environments in order to offer appropriate information and support, and help people with autism to make the choices that are right for them. The conference will be chaired by Jane Garvey, presenter of BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, and will feature keynote presentations on challenging expectations around love and relationships and also taking an insider’s view on puberty and relationships for teenagers. There will be interactive seminars on teaching the difference between public and private behaviour, staying safe, and how to deliver effective group work on relationships.
