Year 9 Science
Experiment: Kidney Dissection
Aim: To investigate the structure of a kidney
Equipment list:




kidney (from butcher)
scalpel
newspaper and dissection board
disposable gloves and goggles
Method:
1. Place newspaper on the lab bench. Place dissection board on top of the
newspaper.
2. BEFORE YOU DISSECT:
a. Try to identify the renal artery, renal vein, ureter
b. Take a photo using your laptop and label each of the above
3. Slice longitudinally through the kidney as per your textbook.
4. Take a photo and add it to your notebook. Add the following labels to your
photo: cortex, medulla, renal pelvis and ureter.
5. Complete a labeled diagram of your kidney. This must be submitted to
your teacher.
