Coast Care Events Coming Up… Dear volunteers Thanks again for all of your Coast Caring actions this year. We have been heartened by the level of interest in Coast Care events and are now in the enviable position of having more keen people than we do plants available to put in the ground! This year there has been a lot of storm erosion over much of the region. This has been caused by a combination of north and easterly winds and waves delivered by the strongest La Nina conditions since 1989, including some very high king tides coinciding with onshore swells. This is a normal coastal process and will be followed by a period of dune recovery at some stage, hopefully not too far into the future! Foredunes that are healthy with pingao and Spinifex should recover quickest as roots, stolons and remaining foliage can trap wind-borne sand. The biggest project this year is the re-planting of previously weeded areas along both Mōtītī and Taylor Roads in Pāpāmoa. Between all of the working bees since May we have managed to plant about 75% of the 30,000 plants earmarked for the area, and with your help we’ll complete the rest before it warms up or dries out too much. If you haven’t already, go and have a look along Karewa Parade to see the great results of your restoration efforts from 2010. It is looking very good. We have made a few changes to plant selection and location thanks to feedback from residents in the area. We’d love to see you at another event soon. Come and join us even if you only have an hour or so up your sleeve – you don’t have to stay for the whole time. For all of the events below please bring covered shoes, warm clothes, a drink and a spade if you have one. We’ll supply morning tea. Check out the website for more information www.boprc.govt.nz and search for “Coast Care”.
