This seminar will cover:

Comprehensive Verbal Skills Workshop: HWC’s Verbal De-escalation Training focuses
on understanding the cycle of tension/relaxation and calibrating the intervention based on
the student’s needs and where the student is on the cycle. HWC also teaches a selfawareness model where staff is taught to monitor and control their reactions to provide
better care and develop the ability to defuse situations through their own behavior and
responses. The program then puts theory into practice in the form of role- plays. Physical
Skills Training: Personal defense, use of personal space and blocking techniques

Personal Defense: Includes the use of personal space, escapes, blocking techniques and
3rd person save methods. HWC is the only technology in the industry that teaches you
how to protect both yourself and another person/student from harm.

Primary Restraint Technique®. The PRT® is versatile, effective, painless, safe and easy
to apply. Staff is positioned in the safest place possible; behind the student. The PRT
conveys an immediate reassuring sense of limits and is very effective with autistic students.

Early Childhood: Pre-School and Early Elementary School Program. HWC has been
training nursery and preschool teachers and psychiatric hospitals serving children as young

This is an Instructor Re-Certification Program ONLY. Participants must have
competed Handle With Care’s Instructor Certification Program Prior to
attending. Enrollment is limited. Slots will fill fast.

Friends Center is within a couple blocks of Suburban Station and various
SEPTA lines and buses. It is a fairly short walk from the 15th-16th & Locust
stop of the PATCO line.
Parking at Friends Center
Ground Lot on 15th Street
When coming to Friends Center by car, we suggest that you use the ground
parking lot across 15th Street from the Center. The lot sits on the 15th Street
block between Cherry and Race Streets.
The main entrance to the lot is on the east side of 15th Street, with another
entrance off of Race Street. Bring your parking ticket with you into Friends
Center and ask our staff member at the front desk to validate the ticket for
you. This can be done when you first arrive or when you are leaving.
The validation will allow you to park for a maximum of $10.
12-Story Parking Garage (Whole block between 15th & 16th Streets and
Vine and Spring Streets)
This garage can be accessed from Spring Street (main entrance) and from 16th
Street. (Spring St. can be accessed from both 15th and 16th Streets and is a little
street running between and parallel to Vine and Race Streets) While Friends
Center has no relationship with this facility, the general rates are a little lower
than other lots in the area ($13 if in before 9 AM and out before 6 PM and $5
on evenings and weekends).
ABOUT FRIENDS CENTER:
Friends Center is a green organization that takes environmental sustainability into
account in everything it does. They would appreciate the use of reusable and
compostable plates, cups, tableware. Friends Center has filtered water and pitchers
available and we will be providing compostable cups.
