Miss M. Carmelle Nesbitt • 7th Grade Math • Wednesday, June 23, 2010 • Per: 4 Reflections and Translations (Formal Eval #2) Objectives: TSW define reflections and translations. (DOK 1, 3d) TSW perform translations using a coordinate plane. (DOK 2, 3d) TSW perform reflections using a coordinate plane. (DOK 2, 3d) Materials: Pencil and paper, transparencies, overhead projector, dry erase markers, erasers, worksheets, “thinking caps,” shapes Bell Ringer: (5 min) 1. What is your favorite line dance or dance? 2. Where did you learn to do this dance? 3. Where do you usually practice this dance? Review Set: (6 min) Cha-Cha Slide o What moves did we make in the Cha-Cha Slide? Move to the left, right, backward, forward (hop). o Watch ourselves in a mirror. Reflection Just like in the Cha Cha Slide, in geometry we move and slide shapes on the coordinate plane. We also reflect or perform reflections with shapes. Today we will be learning how to perform translations and reflections using a coordinate plane. Procedure: (25 min) 1. TTW define reflection and translation. o Reflection- a FLIP across a line As in a mirror- “Mirror, mirror on the wall!” reFLection = FLip opposite, appears to be reflected o Translations- A SLIDE moves in one direction from one place to another As in the Cha-Cha Slide- “Cha Cha Slide!” tranSLations = SLide looks exactly the same, in a different position o Prime- new figure 2. 2. 3. Original image = A New image = A’ When I say reflection- Mirror, mirror on the wall o Translation- Cha-Cha Slide! Check for understanding. TTW model performing translations and reflections on a coordinate plane. (GP) o Using shapes, numbers Point, 1 triangle, the letter E, number 4, hand, arrow o Reflect across x-axis, y-axis, random line (toothpick) o Translate- units up/down, left/right o Vertice chart with original and new TSW complete worksheet (IP). o Give amount of time to work on worksheet!!! (8 mins) TTW review worksheet with students using transparency. Closure (10 min) Today we learned reflections (mirror mirror) and translations (cha cha). o What is a reflection? o What is a flip? o What is the name of the new image? o Model a reflection. o Model a flip. On your index card, write 3 things you learned today and have a clear understanding of. o On the back of the card, write a concept you are still a little confused about. Tomorrow Miss K will teach you about rotations. Assessment/Evaluation: TSW define reflection and translation. (DOK 1, 3d) o Formal: TTW administer a written test (M) including defining reflection and translation using the coordinate plane (C) which will be graded and recorded using Engrade (D). o Informal: TTW monitor students (M) to gauge their understanding as they respond to questions verbally and using their coordinate plane worksheets (C).
