First Aid and CPR Course (HLTH 1150) Minneapolis Community & Technical College/ NAAC Mon-Fri 11:52-12:42 Fall 2014 Course Syllabus Instructor: Phone: Email: Office: Office Hours: Josh Corrigan 612-668-1700 Josh.corrigan@mpls.k12.mn.us Rm. 320 After school Mondays and Tuesdays until 3:30 Course Purpose: This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. This course teaches the skills needed to give immediate care to a suddenly ill or injured person until advanced medical personnel arrive. Course Objectives Describe how to recognize an emergency and activate the emergency medical services (EMS) system. Identify how to reduce the risk of disease transmission when giving care. Explain how to check a conscious or unconscious person for life-threatening and non-life-threatening conditions. Recognize the signals of shock and describe how to minimize its effects. Recognize the signals of a cardiac emergency and describe how to care for a heart attack. Identify the links in the Cardiac Chain of Survival. Demonstrate how to provide CPR until emergency medical care arrives. Demonstrate how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). Demonstrate how to care for a person who is choking. Recognize the signals of a breathing emergency and explain how to provide appropriate care. Recognize life-threatening bleeding and demonstrate how to control it. Recognize the signals of various soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries and demonstrate how to care for them, including splinting. Identify signals of head, neck and spinal injuries. Recognize the signals of injuries to the chest, abdomen and pelvis and describe how to care for them. Recognize the signals of sudden illness, including poisoning, bites and stings, and heat and cold emergencies and describe how to care for them. Attendance: For successful completion of this course, students are expected to attend and actively participate in class. 2. Assignments and Tests: Assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of the class for full credit. Online quizzes and in-class exams must be completed within the assigned times – no make-up of late tests will be provided. 3. Emails: Please email me if you have questions regarding course content, assignments, policies, etc. Email considerations: a. Identification: In emails, identify yourself within the email and put Health 1150 or CPR/First Aid Course in the subject line. b. Grading: Your final grade for this course is based on the total number of points accumulated for all assignments. Grades will be awarded as follows: Points Earned 92-100 % of the total possible points and Meet certification requirements. 81 -91% of the total possible points (or more points but certification requirements not met) 71 - 80% of the total possible points 60 - 70% of the total possible Less than 60% of the total possible points HLTH 1150 Fall 2014 Page 2 of 3 Grade A B C D F Course Evaluation: Your course grade will be based on the following factors: 1. Knowledge (assignments, quizzes, exams) – 60% 2. Skill Demonstrations – 40% Details about Course Evaluation: 1. Quizzes and Exams: There will be online quizzes consisting of multiple-choice and true-false questions; each question is worth 1-point.The quizzes are generally available for a 1-week period and must be completed during that time – missed quizzes cannot be made up. In addition, there are 2, in-class final comprehensive written exams: CPR Final Exam and First Aid Final Exam. For certification, students must pass each of the final exam components with a score of 80% or greater. Students are expected to complete the final exams during the posted time period. 2. Skill Demonstrations and Participation: Throughout the semester, students will be asked to correctly demonstrate skills taught in the course, a requirement for CPR/AED and First Aid certifications. Correct demonstration of the skill means being able to successfully perform the skill from start to finish without coaching. The required skills and demonstration dates are listed on the course agenda. There will be 2 make-up sessions scheduled per semester for missed skills. Make-up skills are awarded 50% of assigned points. NOTE: Students will only be allowed to make-up skill demonstrations for 1 missed class. Attendance and class participation are critical for successful completion of this course. Students are expected to attend class, be on-time for class and actively participate in the discussions and in-class activities. In addition, students are expected to bring their textbook to every class. Course Schedule: The schedule of activities will evolve throughout the semester based on the chapters in the textbook. The plan is to follow the order of the textbook topics with some minor adjustments as needed. The instructor will provide weekly updates of topics to be covered and upcoming assignments.
