ELA: W.4.9.1, W.4.9.5
CCSS: WHST 10.6, 9.6
(Author: Shannon Terry)
Unit: Unit 5 PowerPoint
Framework: 5.2
 What concept within the framework is to be developed? What is the specific objective of
the lesson?
5.2 Create a presentation
5.2.1 Plan and format a presentation: transitions, graphics, animations, design,
template/theme, slide layout
Objectives: Students will create a presentation using various features in PowerPoint including
clipart/graphics, animations, design/template/theme, and slide layout. The lesson is a two
Part lesson—1. To demonstrate prior knowledge and ability to a create presentation and 2. To
“market” themselves to potential employers/colleges, examine and reinforce employability
skills, and a positive self-esteem.
 What do students probably already know about the content? What prior knowledge
needs to be activated?
Students have at least seen a PowerPoint presentation either from another teacher presenting
new material, a guidance counselor showing course offerings, test scores, etc.
How many of you used PowerPoint in middle school or junior high to create a presentation for
one of your classes?
Have you ever seen a presentation with sound or video clips and wondered how they did that?
 What don’t they know?
Most students know the basics of a PowerPoint. The 7 x 7 rule would need to be discussed, as
well as the idea of your “power” points.
 Key ideas and main focus…avoid sentences and paragraphs. You can elaborate on each
slide with your speech/presentation.
 Discuss/Review the more “advanced” concepts and techniques that are available in
PowerPoint 2010 using an Interactive board
Define employability skills.
Lay the groundwork for what colleges are looking for in a potential student, as well as what an
potential employer would be looking for…qualities, talents, and abilities.
Dress “code” during an interview for a potential job or college admission.
 Is there potential for misconception?
Instructions will be very clear on the idea of selling themselves to potential
employers/colleges, including looking at all of their positive characteristics in a way that
engages and interests the viewer. They will incorporate text, pictures, video, and audio in the
presentation that should produce feelings of success by the viewer.
 What should students be able to do at the end of the lesson?
Produce a presentation in PowerPoint 2010 that not only shows their ability to apply the
various concepts learned in this unit, but to be able to see themselves as a unique individual
with talents, skills, qualities, and abilities that will make them productive citizens.

Various websites to help them recognize employability skills and/or college acceptance
requirements. One example:
o http://www.apprenticesearch.com/resources/page?pageid=428
Microsoft PowerPoint
Textbook (Microsoft Office 2010-Shelly Cashman Series), and the Help Menu.
 What questions will focus students’ thinking on the concept and help guide learning?
What skills/qualities/talents/abilities do YOU possess that would make you more appealing to
a potential college and/or employer?
How should you format your presentation so that it makes you look more appealing than the
other candidates? (Review the key concepts/techniques used to make a PowerPoint
presentation).
How should you dress for your presentation?
 How will I assess students’ understanding of the essential concepts and major details?
Students will present the PowerPoint and will be graded with a rubric given at the beginning
of the assignment. Dress for the presentation should be professional.

What Students Will Do
What Teacher Will Do
Brainstorming

your partner compiled.

Interactive board.
Review proper PowerPoint rules
including: 7X7 rule--purpose is to give
your “power points”!
