They may also be mailed to: Pamela Perry Photography Competition 611 W. Columbia Street San Augustine, TX 75972 All photos must be picked up by 4pm November 6, 2015 at the Chamber of Commerce. The photos will be on display at the San Augustine Courthouse (First Floor) on October 24. *Any photos not picked up by Nov, 6 may be discarded.* Eligibility: Entered photographs must have been taken by the applicant. Entrants are solely responsible for obtaining necessary authorizations in order to submit their work to the Sassafras Festival 2015 Juried Photography Competition. (i.e., model release form, etc., See “Model Release Form” included in packet). Contest is open to all photographers, amateur or professional. Registration form must accompany each submitted photo. Duplicates can be made if necessary. Entry Fee: There will be a $2.00 entry fee for each submission. There is no limit on the number of photos entered. Photographs: Print size should be 8x10. It is strongly suggested that all prints be mounted to the matte board. There is a mounting spray available in art- or photographic-supply stores. Peel and stick mattes are another option. Proper mounting will preserve, protect, and better present your photograph. It will also prevent mattes and/or photographs from coming loose and falling during the exhibit. There is no restriction on the time period in which the photograph was taken. Entries may be in color, black and white and/or digitally altered. Digital and film are accepted. Judging: A panel of judges will evaluate the work, and award the appropriate prizes. The judging criteria will be based on relevance to category topic, composition and arrangement, focus, sharpness, lighting, creativity, and content. Decision of the judges is final. Winners will be displayed during the festival along with all other entries. (See “Judging Criteria Guide” included in the packet) Prizes: Prizes will be awarded: Ribbons for First, Second, Third, and Honorable Mention (in each category), and Best of Show! Note: if you photograph an animal in a zoo or "rent-a-beast" park, including this information in the description will not hurt your chances and will in fact help by giving credit where credit is due. Digital Darkroom: This category is appropriate for digital art - images created or drastically altered in software like Adobe Photoshop®. If you have an photo that you love (that doesn't seem to fit into the other categories of nature, landscape, people, animals, design, digital darkroom, travel, place, flowers, macro, and details), enter it into this category. Polaroid image & emulsion transfers Still-life Long exposure zoomed images Painting with light Any other (family-friendly) images. All contest entries can be shot with a digital or film-based camera. The contests are open to all photographers, regardless of skill level. In the end, a photo may fit into more than one category. But remember... you can only enter a particular photo into one category per mount. You cannot enter a photo repeatedly in various categories. Carefully analyze your photo and then choose the most fitting category. What We Do Not Take Into Account As long as the subject matter fits, the following kinds of images can be categorized in any of the above categories - we do not separate the contest entries based on the following criteria: Digitally manipulated images Black and white images Humorous photos vs. "serious" photos Photos by professionals Photos by amateurs Photos taken with a digital camera Photos taken with a 35mm SLR Note on Digital Manipulation Although digitally manipulated entries are allowed, we ask that you note the digital techniques used to create the picture in the description of your photo. The judges do not discriminate against digital images but do appreciate when the contestant openly shares that such digital editing has occurred. These categories are intended to help you enjoy the photo contest. They are not written in stone and are considered suggestions more than rules. We reserve the right to determine when a photo fits or does not fit into a particular category. 5 Model Release Form San Augustine Sassafras Festival Photo Competition October 24, 2015 Pamela Perry – Photography Competition Coordinator (936) 404-6098 For good and valuable Consideration herein acknowledged as received and by signing this release I hereby give the Photographer and the San Augustine County Chamber of Commerce my permission to use the Images in any Media for any purpose in printed materials and web (except those not intended for family oriented websites) which may include, among others, advertising, promotion, marketing, and packaging. Likewise, it is expected that individual participants will prepare accordingly through study of photographic styles and techniques in books, magazines, and Internet research. While adhering to the rules that are provided in the Contest Rules and Entry Form may be the first step for entry into the contest, there are many other factors which guide the judges in deciding which photos are worthy of ribbons. This criterion includes: Relevancy to Category Topic - Is the photo an obvious illustration of the category in which it is entered? (i.e.; "Nature's Beauty", etc.) Composition / Arrangement - Are the objects in the photo arranged in a meaningful, pleasing manner or are they "haphazard"? Did the photographer use the best angle or otherwise interesting perspective? Focus / Sharpness - Is the object of the photo in focus? If not in sharp focus, does it appear to be an intentional effect to enhance the image in some "artistic" way? Lighting - Did the photographer use proper lighting of the subject matter? Do any extremes of darkness or brightness lend to or detract from the image content? Creativity - Does the photographer show some creative thought or original idea in the making of this image? Using these criteria as a guide along with their own knowledge of photography, the judges award ribbons for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, and honorable mention for each of the categories in both age divisions and overall best of show. Good luck and happy photographing! 7
