PALGRAVE HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION GENERAL MEETING MAY 8, 2014 MINUTES Principal’s Report Ms. Johnson thanked Meredith, Carolyn and Jane for doing a wonderful job on the flower beds in the front of the school. She also wanted to thank Karen McDonald for organizing the career day for the grade 8’s. DARE program update Constable Maryanne is quite ill. She will finish off the grade 6 program when she is feeling better. A replacement officer has not been announced. “OPP for Kids” Officers were in to speak to the grade 7s about peer pressure and the legal consequences of stealing etc. The grade 5 students participated in a writing contest “Sargent and Inspector for the Day”. Both winners were chosen from Palgrave. Next Thursday morning the winners will be driven by police car to the station in Caledon East for the day. The grade 8s are currently on their trip to Quebec City. The weather has been great and the kids are having a great time. Ms. George discussed a new computer program called “Prodigy”. It was developed by a former Peel student who had exposure to Kumon program while growing up. It is based on the Ontario Math Curriculum. It is free for the teachers, and students. The students are able to sign on at home. Parents can purchase additional options (clothing and accessories). Teachers can see which areas students are having difficulties in. Ms. George will have a demo for our next meeting. Tomorrow is National Day of Honour. Tony Pontes will recognize the 10 year Canadian mission in Afghanistan, which took 158 soldiers lives. The students will observe one minute of silence at 1:27 pm. |P a g e The month of May is Asian heritage month. Art from around the world will be showcased. Mr. Patton will be looking for an appropriate lunchtime movie. Many of the classes have been incorporating Asian facts into their studies. - I.e. Great Wall of China Grade 7s will be going to Niagara Falls on May 22, as an extension of their history study. Cross country will be held on May 23 for the grade 3-6 students at Caledon Central. The internal track and field tryouts for grades 4-8 will be held on May 20th. It will be held at Palgrave Park. The best in each event will participate at James Bolton on June 13th. Rain date will be June 20th. The intermediate track & field meet for grades 7-8 will be held at Chinguacousy Park on June 17th. The primary playdate will be held on June 13th. The Grade 4 Medieval Feast will need to be rescheduled as it conflicts with the Provincial Election Day. (June 12th). The new date is June 18th. The Salmon Release will be held on June 11th. Student Report Writing Day will be June 9th – there will be no classes for students. Dental screening will be offered to the Year 1 & Year 2 kindergartens and the grade 2s on May 26th. The next character assembly will be held on May 26th in the afternoon. Grade 8 Graduation will be held on June 25th. EQAO testing for grade 6s will be held on May 29, 30 & June 2nd. Grade 3 testing will be held on June 2-4th. Brenda Evans sent poster about the upcoming Bike Safety Seminar which will be held on May 17th - at Caledon East Recreation Centre. Just a reminder that wearing a bike helmet is the law. Any child, who does not wear a helmet to school, will not be allowed to ride their bike. The Kiss n Ride lane is not to be used to park cars. If you need to park, find a spot. |P a g e Peel Health #300 has commissioned a contractor to complete line painting on the playground hard surface over the summer. The only criteria is that the painting must be colourful, and must be able to be seen by Google earth. Painting will include 4 square, hopscotch and lines for the basketball nets. We are hoping to get an electronic sign. We had to change the suggested location, due to the location of the utilities. The sign will be similar to the one at Southfield Public School. The sign will be 2 sided and visible from Hwy #50 and Patterson Sideroad. Total Assets on March 31, 2014 $ 37,388.27 (Includes cash, shares, GIC’s) Revenue $ 410.21 Expenses $ 8,502.91 Total Assets on April 30, 2014 $ 29,295.57 Note: Please contact Krista Murray for more information regarding the Treasurer’s Report. 3.0 Committee Reports Coordinators Positions - We are in good position for next year. Mandy will be taking over for Michelle. Food - It seems to be working well. No issues to discuss. |P a g e Community Spirit - There are still a couple of families that Home & School are supporting. Milkshould be food - Vesna has indicated that Home & School should invest in an online ordering system. She has provided details of one software which costs $500.00 for the initial setup and a $300 annual maintenance fee. Parents would have to enter the details, and we would still use the same vendors. Running Club - Started on Tuesday, and it was well attended. More volunteers are needed. Fundraisers - We need to discuss possibilities for the 2014 – 2015 year. (Dance-athon, rain barrels) Home & School Newsletter - Will be completed in June. Basketball Nets - Two additional nets have been ordered, at the same price as last year. Fall BBQ - The tentative date is September 30th. Other Important 2014 – 2015 Dates First day - September 2nd Re-org day - September 23rd Picture day - September 30th |P a g e 4.0 Releases The following releases from the Home and School budget money were discussed: Track and Field (k – 8) $500 Technology $1,300 - for headphones Outdoor learning environment $800 - kindergarten purchases, including funds to be spent on the gardens. Additional funds may be released at the June meeting. A motion to release the above monies was made by Krista, seconded by Shannon, voted and carried. Budget 2014 – 2015 Discussions - to be finalized at the June meeting. Next Home and School meeting is scheduled for Thursday June 5, 2014 at 7:30 in the Palgrave Public School library. |P a g e
