Radio news release
What is a radio news release and why do I need to use it? The purpose of the radio
news release is to inform the radio media members of an upcoming event, announcement,
or any newsworthy item that could lead to story placement. It is very similar to a press
release, but it is typically shorter and geared toward the radio in terms of length and sound
bites. This is a beneficial tool used by many public relations professionals that, if timed
correctly and used effectively, can lead to media coverage providing you, your club, event,
etc., publicity at virtually no cost to you.
Who gets the radio news release? Radio news releases can be sent out to your local
radio stations. They can be mailed, faxed, or e-mailed to the sports or managing editor. If
you are not familiar with the local radio stations in your area, you can find most contacts
online or by calling your local stations.
What should a radio news release look like? Below is a sample radio news release. For
the purposes of this sample, announcing the 2014 USPTA World Conference is the topic, but
as mentioned before, it can be used for a variety of announcements and events. It will differ
from the press release because there is a word count and read time provided, there are
sound bites and it is much shorter in length. It is wise to put the release on professional
letterhead whether it is your own or your club's.
