JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY: To conduct and oversee the overall hygiene and daily
cleaning of the facility. Ensure that the daily custodial staff is present and set-up for
replacements as needed. To conduct daily custodial needs such as work orders, setups for athletic and other events through the use of technology. Assists the head
custodian in maintaining and cleaning the facility. To lead the school year and the
summer cleaning operations. To work with district and outside facility users to ensure a
positive and enjoyable experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The duties described below are
indicative of what a part-time Custodian may be asked to perform. Other duties may be
assigned.
I.
Cleaning Tasks
a. Sweep/vacuum floors
b. Empty wastebaskets
c. Wash chalkboards and erasers and white boards
d. Sanitize drinking fountains
e. Wash windows and doors
f. Align furniture
g. Spot-clean walls
h. Wash desks and furniture
i.
Complete dusting
j.
Spot-damp-mop all floors
k. Change light bulbs

l. Clean and sanitize toilets and urinals
m. Refill all paper towel dispensers and toilet paper dispensers
n. Strip, wax and buff floors.
o. Move furniture or athletic equipment and set-up bleachers or risers.
p. Shovel snow.
q. Drive a personal or District vehicle to deliver or pick-up materials, etc. (A
valid driver’s license and successful driving record background check
would be required in order to drive for school-related business.
Employees who do not meet this requirement will not be asked to drive.)

III.
Perform other duties deemed necessary as directed by the Operations
Supervisor.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must
be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
a. High school graduate or beyond.
b. Knowledge and understanding of cleaning and maintenance of schools or
other institutions.
c. An understanding of proper standards for cleanliness, maintenance and
safety of public facilities.
d. Prior experience desirable.
e. Certificate of completion of low pressure boiler training is required and must
be obtained within one year of start of position.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1.
Technical Skills: The individual must possess the following:
a. Knowledge of proper cleaning and maintenance procedures.
b. Skills necessary to operate such equipment as cleaning scrubbers,
vacuums, etc.
c. The capability to learn the job easily and comprehend all training
procedures.
d. Ability to operate and make routine repairs to custodial equipment.
e. Fundamental knowledge of cleaning supplies, their uses and applications.
f. Fundamental knowledge of plumbing, electricity, and carpentry and the
skills necessary for basic maintenance in those areas.
g. Working knowledge of all mechanical equipment and service systems in the
building.
h. Working knowledge of current technologies and ability to change with the
fast passed technology upgrades as they apply to custodial operations.
Examples: Facility scheduling software, building automation systems,
preventive maintenance software, work order processing, access controls,
and true-time / time off software.
i. Fundamental knowledge of building maintenance and general repairs: i.e.
locks/lockers, doors/door closers, window replacement, etc.

Organizational Skills: The individual must possess the following
a. Ability to organize time: i.e., be able to work on one-time-only tasks as well
as ongoing tasks, while at the same time handling interruptions, etc.
b. Ability to establish priorities: i.e., recognize tasks that need to be done and
do them without supervision and anticipate the needs and requirements of
head custodians/Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.
c. Ability to organize materials and maintain an efficient work schedule.
d. Ability to be a self-starter who does not need constant direction from head
custodians or principals.
e. Ability to tolerate and work in pressure situations during which large
volumes of work must be accomplished in a short period of time, sometimes
without a clear delineation of priorities.
f. Ability to lead and oversee the work of others.

Communication Skills: The individual must possess the following:
a. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality relating to all business, personnel,
and school district matters. Non-compliance is cause for discipline which
may be immediate dismissal.
b. Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people/children.
c. Ability to meet people personally and over the telephone in a courteous, yet
business-like manner.
