SMART Business Recognition Program Thank you for your interest in the Sustainable Management of Assets, Resources and Technology (SMART) Recognition Program. The SMART Business Recognition Program is designed to encourage businesses to adopt policies and practices that encourage good management of financial, human and natural resources. In partnership with local entities (Avista Utilities, Department of Ecology, Eastern Washington University, and Spokane Regional Solid Waste System), the program will recognize businesses who adopt smart resource management systems, practices and policies. A business may be recognized by the SMART program on two levels, “participant” or “certified”. Participant level is for businesses that commit to better manage their assets, resources and/or technology. Certified level is for businesses that demonstrate they have adopted changes that resulted in better management of assets, resources and/or technology. Ultimately, both levels should lead businesses to a better work environment, a healthier more productive workforce, more customers, and an increase in the bottom line. In recognition of your achievements, you will receive a SMART Sustainable Business decal for the participant and/or certified program(s). The decal is in the form of a window cling as well as an electronic format for use on your letterhead, business cards, website and other marketing materials. Decals will be provided for each of the following categories, upon qualification: Energy Efficiency Green Building Renewable Energy Historic Preservation Waste Reduction/Recycling Innovation (for outstanding Water Conservation achievement within any of the 8 Pollution Prevention categories) Transportation Businesses can choose to apply for recognition in any or all categories. Just fill out the application for the category(ies) and level(s) of participation most relevant to your interests and qualifications. Please note that you will need to provide additional documentation to verify your activities for the certified level. If you have any questions about the program or the application, please contact Kirsten Nolan at Sustainable Resources INW, (509) 209-2861, kirsten@sustaininw.org. COMPLETED applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. Once approved, applicants will receive an electronic version of the decal. Window clings will be printed and distributed periodically, as demand warrants. Main, Suite 240 Spokane, WA 99201 SMART Business Recognition Program Application First Name: Last Name: Business Name: Address: City: Phone: Cell Phone: Email: Business Website: State: Zip: Submitted by: POLLUTION PREVENTION Pollution prevention is any practice which reduces the amount of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant from entering the waste stream or otherwise released to the environment prior to recycling, treatment, or disposal; and reduces the hazards to public health and environmental impacts associated with the release of such substances. These practices are referred to as best management practices or BMPs. Below you can see what you can do to qualify for the pollution prevention participant and certified categories. Participant Level FIVE (5) of the following 11 practices are required: Routinely check storage areas, pipes, parking areas and equipment for leaks, spills and emissions of chemicals, paints, and cleaners; repair any deficient items found. Locate all potential pollutants away from food preparation, service and storage areas, and sewer and storm drains. Use commercial car washes to wash business vehicles. (Tip: Ask the car wash if they have a water recycling system.) Ensure that garbage and recycling container lids are closed, not leaking, and located away from storm drains. Cover and contain any hazardous materials stored outdoors. Properly dispose of (recycle) fluorescent tubes and light bulbs, motor oils, batteries, and electronics; use rechargeable batteries and appliances. (For a comprehensive listing of all drop-off and buy back centers and materials accepted, go to http://solidwaste.org/uploads/recycling%20facility%20matrix%20from%202007%20swmp.doc.) Sweep rather than hose off outside paved areas. Use refillable spray bottles instead of aerosol cans when cleaning. Implement measures to reduce vehicle emissions (e.g., no-idling policy, hybrid or electric vehicles, encourage employees to walk/bike/bus to work). Request a Business Waste Reduction Assessment from the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System: 625-6536 or http://www.solidwaste.org/sub502f.php?id=5217 Certified Level THREE (3) of the following 7 practices are required: Contract with a WSDA-licensed company for landscaping or pest control. (Check licenses at: http://www.agr.wa.gov/PestFert/LicensingEd/default.aspx) Reduce or eliminate use of pesticides by implementing Integrated Pest Management (e.g., beneficial insects, composting, mulching, hand pulling, pruning). Establish a business-specific spill prevention and response program (including employee training and engagement) for dealing with hazardous waste. Purchase and use products and materials with low toxicity and low-no VOCs (e.g., cleaning products, inks, paint, solvents, carpet, flooring, adhesives, flame retardants in upholstered furniture). Require staff or contracted janitorial services to use third-party certified “green” cleaning products (e.g., Green Seal, EcoLogo, USDA Biopreferred). Regularly assess if any hazardous waste generated on-site requires disposal, document these inspections and keep records of corrective actions taken. (Technical assistance and disposal options can be obtained through the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System: 625-7898 or http://www.solidwaste.org/sube3c5.php?id=5104.)
