Materials: World Map on Corkboard, Yarn, Mission Focus Page, 2 Thumbtacks,
Crayons, Post-It Notes (Each Note has One of These Words Written in Small Print:
Bed, Chair, House, Couch)
(Allow10-15 Minutes)
Say: Tell me what God did on the 7 th day.
Do: Allow children to respond.
Say: Why do you think God rested?
Do: Allow children to respond.
Say: I don’t think God becomes tired, so I think God rested because creation was complete. There wasn’t anything else to make. God also set an example that resting was important. We need to rest. Where can you rest?
Do: Allow children to respond. Pass out a post-it note to each child. Ask them to make a drawing of their word. Read post-it-notes to younger children.
Say: On your post-it notes you drew some interesting things. What did you draw?
(Pause for Response) These are all places you can rest. What would happen, if you didn’t have any of these things?
Do: Allow children to respond.
Say: Who knows what a hurricane is? (Pause for Response) Can you describe what happens during a hurricane? (Pause for Response) What kinds of things are destroyed during hurricanes? (Pause for Response)
Say: Sometimes when a hurricane comes, it can destroy homes and everything that belongs to someone. The water can ruin clothes and furniture. The wind can blow buildings over, slam trees through cars and houses, and blow belongings away. Hurricanes are dangerous. Where would you go, where would you rest, if your house was blown away in a hurricane?
Do: Allow children to respond.
Say: When hurricanes come and destroy people’s homes, they need help to rebuild, so their families have a safe place to live and rest. The United Methodist
Church works very hard to help people who have survived disasters. The United
Methodist Committee on Relief helps people rebuild after natural disasters, like hurricanes. Why do you think this is important?
Do: Allow children to respond.
1
Do: Allow children to respond. Then, have a child place a thumbtack on New York and tack the ‘Mission Focus Page’ off to the side of the map. Take the yarn and connect the thumbtacks. Place their post it notes around the ‘Mission Focus’ page. **Last week’s information should still be posted.**
Say: Helping people have safe places to rebuild and rest after they have lived through disasters, brings them hope!
Do: Point to the map.
Say: Our church helps people who are in need all around the world. We provide hope for those who need rest, food for those who are hungry, and water for those who do not have it. These are just some examples of the work we do to serve God.
Why should we serve God by helping others?
Do: Allow children to respond.
Say: On Day 6, we learned that we were made in the image of God. We are supposed to live like God and love like God. Just like God has always been here,
God has always been providing for us. Before we were even made, God had provided everything we needed. Since God has always been providing for us and we are supposed to love like God, we should provide for others.
Pray: Thank you God for creating the Earth and all the things we need to live.
Help us to show your love by taking care of others who do not have everything they need to live.

This mission serves people who have been affected by hurricane disasters.
During a hurricane many people lose their homes and their belongings. This project is helping rebuild homes on the
East Coast of the United States, because many people’s homes were destroyed or damaged during Hurricane Sandy. http://www.umcmission.org/Give-to-Mission
