Lesson 1 Class/Grade Level Science 8 Period/Time : 1 period Daily Objective: - Identify and describe the atmospheric and hydrospheric conditions associated with the formation and development of hurricanes. - Essential Motivating Question Every year hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage and hundreds of lives are lost as a result of hurricanes in the Atlantic basin. Why are hurricanes so devastatingly damaging and are they becoming more intense? As Mayor of a local coastal town, what instructions will you give to your citizens to prepare for the oncoming hurricane. If you decide to evacuate, at what point would you give that instruction? Subquestions: When do they most likely occur? Where do they most often occur? How do scientist study Hurricanes Procedures Warm – Up: View Video clips of current hurricane. What did you see happening? Class discusses. Development of the Lesson – See ppt for Lesson #1 In journal each student individually writes and / or draws what they already know about hurricanes. Step 2 students share their knowledge with a partner and may add to or change their knowledge base. Step 3 short sharing with class of common knowledge Step 4 Show short video clips of hurricane formation. Encourage students to add to their journal knowledge about hurricanes. Step 5 View Hurricane formation animation. Encourage students to add to their journal knowledge about hurricanes. Step 6 Again have students write or draw what they know about hurricanes. Step 7 Have students compare the information in Step 6 to the information in Step 2 and list what they know now that they did not know then. Student Product: Students will create journal entries and diagrams of hurricane formation. Students will constantly update this page as new information becomes available.
