Instructions
This application is for graduate assistantships available to students in VCU School of Education doctoral degree programs. It does not
replace the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), nor is there any exchange of information between the VCU School of
Education and the VCU Office of Financial Aid.
**Please carefully review the criteria for an assistantship before you apply to ensure that you qualify. Please find assistantship
information at: http://www.soe.vcu.edu/prospective-students/scholarships/. Students must plan to be enrolled full time in a
degree-seeking program in order to be eligible for an assistantship.
Step 1: Fill Out the Application Form
1-6. Personal data as requested
7. Date (semester and year) accepted to VCU/SOE
8. Date (semester and year) of expected graduation
9. Check the box of the degree you will receive.
10. Check the box of your current status.
11. Indicate your program of study (i.e., Counselor Education,
Research and Evaluation, Special Education, etc.)
12. Current VCU cumulative GPA
13. Transfer students should indicate cumulative GPA from
institutions previously attended. New students should
indicate GPA from undergraduate and master’s programs.
14. Provide a semester/year, course number, course title, and
number of credit hours as indicated for courses in which
you plan to enroll during the next semester and/or year.
15-18. Provide information as requested.
19. Provide contact information for references. Two
recommendation letters are required to support your
application for assistantship One letter must be from a
VCU School of Education Faculty member. New students
can substitute a faculty reference from an institution
previously attended. Reference forms used for admission
to graduate school are not acceptable.
20. Essay – please submit a typed essay of 500 words
minimum (two typed, double-spaced pages) that
addresses your career goals in education, professional
skills and contributions you would bring to the program as
a graduate assistant.
21. Financial information – Provide information as requested.
Please do not include specific dollar amounts, UNLESS you
feel it is a critical piece of information that enhances the
description of your financial need.
22. Your signature indicates that the information on your
application is current and accurate.
Step 2: Attachments
1. Transcripts – Please attach a copy of your unofficial undergraduate and/or graduate transcripts from VCU. Official sealed
transcripts are required from other institutions.
2. Essay – See number 22 above.
3. Letters of reference – (unless sent or delivered separately by the referrer).
4. Current resume/Vitae – Optional
Step 3: Confirm Reference Letters
Confirm with your references that letters are submitted in time to meet the assistantship deadline.
Step 4: Submit
