“CHILDREN AT RISK”
International Autumn Course 2015

For students of social pedagogy or social work this international 30 ECTS course offers insight into important theory, methods and ethics
related to professional social pedagogical work with children, youth and families at risk. The “Children at Risk” programme is based on
Danish pedagogical traditions demanding independence, responsibility, high engagement and self-discipline from the students. It includes
dialogue in class and groups, also outside of class, and a general participatory approach to learning.
The working language of the programme is English.
Participants
For “Children at Risk 2015” UCZ accepts 20-25 international students from social pedagogy, social work or related bachelor
programmes. We give high priority to the diversity of the group. A maximum of 5 Danish students participate in the programme.
It is preferable – but not mandatory – that the students have had some practical experience within professional pedagogical work before
joining this course.
Modules, Credits and Learning Outcomes
The course is a progression of three modules, each of 10 ects and each completed through an exam.
Module 1: Cultural Encounter and Interculturality
a. Cultural theory, cultural analysis and coherence between culture and pedagogic praxis related to children at risk
b. Knowledge about integration and inclusion processes and about methods for supporting the development of cultural communities
c. Competences to organize, implement and evaluate pedagogic activities regarding cultural diversity as a resource
Module 2: Social Pedagogic Theories, Ethics and Inclusion
a. Knowledge about goals and values in pedagogy aimed at children at risk
b. Knowledge on ethnicity, power relationships and professional ethics
c. Practical skills within management and development of group processes across ethnic, cultural and linguistic differences aiming at
improvement of well-being, development and life quality of social pedagogic target groups

Module 3: Social Pedagogic Work for Change
a. An introduction to theories and practical methods attached to innovation, entrepreneurship and processes of change in pedagogic work
with exposed and vulnerable children and young people, including knowledge on project designing, dissemination and management
b. Knowledge about potentials of aesthetic learning and developing processes regarding involvement and stimulation of children’s own
creativity, culture and perspectives
c. Competences for planning, implementing and evaluating pedagogical processes of change, while involving cultural diversity as a
resource and aesthetic processes as a tool
Additional Learning Outcomes:
● Personal competences of intercultural communication and cooperation
● A professional vocabulary and communication skills in English
● Insight into social pedagogical philosophy, traditions and developments in various countries
● Competences in communicating empathetically with children at risk
● Development of professional critical reflection – individually and in groups – on pedagogical approaches and methods
● Insight into the potential of aesthetical expressions in pedagogical work
● Knowledge on Danish Social pedagogical work and institutions
● Competences in carrying out group based study projects based on research questions
Assignments and Assessments
During their study assignments the students are supported by specific guidelines and supervision from the team of professors. The
students will be given one assignment for each of the three modules mentioned above, each of these assessed according to the ECTS
grading scale.
At the completion of the programme the student will receive a certificate stating the learning outcomes of the programme, the subject of
the student’s project work and the grades obtained in the exams of the three main assignments.

Grants
An exchange agreement between the schools will qualify you for grants and allow you to engage in student exchange without tuition fee.
University College Zealand has bilateral Erasmus exchange agreements with University Colleges and other universities all over Europe.
Likewise we have Nordplus agreements with some schools in Scandinavia.
Ask your international coordinator if our institution have an exchange agreement or to contact us to make one.
Accommodation and Transport
UCZ can support participating students in finding accommodation in the vicinity of the campus. Generally we use a student college right
beside campus offering single rooms with toilet, bath and mini kitchen included. Students can also arrange accommodation of their own.
UCZ also offers bicycle rental - for free.
Extra-curricular activities
Students are welcome to use the Facilities on Campus such as canteen, sport, music and drama rooms on campus as well as the ‘Friday
Bar’. We also cooperate with various students’ organizations enabling a wider contact with other Danish and international students.
A ‘student buddy’ group is facilitating your stay in every way.
