Community Art Exhibit Guidelines Please contact Homer Council on the Arts (HCOA) if you have questions. If you are unable to fulfill these expectations on your own and need assistance, please let us know. We are here to help. 907.235.4288 or hcoa@homerart.org Expectations for Submission Work must be submitted to the HCOA office, 355 W. Pioneer Ave., between 1 –5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Submissions forms for “Work=Art” exhibit (February 2016) are due Friday, January 8. - Artwork needs to be dropped off by Thursday, January 14. - First Friday exhibit opening – February 5. We accept drawings, paintings, photography, mixed media, prints, fiber arts, video and new media, ceramics, sculpture, and other creative endeavors. Please contact us if you are uncertain that your work can be accommodated at HCOA. Work must be "Gallery Ready." See below for details. The HCOA exhibitions committee will make artwork selections. You do not have to be a member of HCOA to participate in a community art exhibit. How to be "Gallery Ready" Works of art must be completely finished, neat, and clean. While this is a community art show, and we embrace imperfections, we expect a sense of pride and quality in the work from our artists. Professionalism should be your aim in presenting your artwork. Works on canvas must be framed, unless if they have been stretched in a "gallery wrap" style. Framed works of art must have a hanging wire attached to the back with hardware rated for its weight. Textile art, such as weavings, batik, or silk painting should have a rod through the top with a string for hanging, or some other way to hang it. Smaller sculptures will be displayed on pedestals, supplied here at HCOA, or on shelves. Larger sculptures may be displayed on the floor or on tables. Please prepare a suitable, presentable base for large sculptures (finished wood, stone, composite material, etc.). Digital media/video should be submitted on a CD or flash drive. Equipment required for digital media artwork (screens, projectors, sound equipment, computers, etc.) will be provided by the artist. Artwork that is unfinished will not be accepted for display (for example, wet paint, wet glue, unintentional marks, severely damaged artwork, unframed/non-matted drawings, etc.). Please e-mail us if you are uncertain if your work is acceptable. We are here to help. Matting Suggestions Choose a color of mat that best complements the works of art. Neutral tones work well, such as black, white, gray. Try holding a few different tones next to the artwork to see which b est complements the piece. Leave about a half an inch of white space around the image on paper (if possible). Suitable dimensions for the mat would be 2" on top, 2" on the sides, and 2.5" on the bottom. The extra mat on the bottom compensates for the "visual weight" which tricks the eye into making the bottom space look smaller. A beveled edge looks great. Mat cutters can be purchased from Homer Art and Frame. A regular 90-degree straight edge is also fine. Community Art Exhibit Submission Form Please tape this form to the back of two-dimensional artwork. If the submission is sculpture, please make sure that this form is securely attached in some way. Please print and be sure that the information you provide is complete and spelled correctly.
