Scholarships
Below are two scholarships sponsored by the state and regional gifted organizations:
Virginia Association for the Gifted (VAG) Summer Scholarships
VAG offers summer scholarships designed for those gifted students who wish to attend academic or
artistic programs during the summer months. The scholarships are in amounts ranging from $100 $500 and are available for students, K-12.
Application deadline is February 1, 2014. Applicants will be notified of their award status
by April 15.

Northern Virginia Council for Gifted/Talented Education (NVCG/TE)
NVCG/TE offers summer scholarships for programs for gifted students who have not yet attained a
high school diploma and wish to take part in an educational enrichment program, summer workshop, or
enroll in college credit courses.
Scholarship amounts for qualified applicants vary, but do not exceed twenty-five percent (25%) of the
cost of the program; in no case does a scholarship exceed $500. Scholarships are not based on
financial need.
All applications must be postmarked by February 3, 2014. All applicants will be notified
after March 1.

Fine Arts Apprentice Program
Applications for the 2014-2015 School Year Fine Arts Apprentice Program are available on the
APS Arts Education link: http://www.apsva.us/page/1722
The Fine Arts Apprentice Program provides specialized experiences beyond the regular art, music and
drama curriculum for selected high school students (rising 10th, 11th, or 12th graders). Opportunities
for students may include ensemble works, master classes, attendance at professional rehearsals and
performances, museum courses, small group instruction, seminars, exhibit and performance
opportunities.
Students may also pick up an application from their high school resource teacher for the gifted.
There will be an information night on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 6:00 PM at the Syphax
Education Center (2110 Washington Blvd, Arlington, VA. Please park in garage on Level B1 &
B2)
Students selected for the Apprentice Program receive a pass/fail grade and a 1/2 credit for a minimum
of 75 hours of arts experience outside the school course requirements. These opportunities take place
out of the school day and are often offered in the evenings and on weekends. Students are able to
select opportunities of interest that work with their school commitments and extra-curricular activities.

Arlington Public Schools Summer Laureate Program
The APS summer school catalog describing the dates and times of the opportunities for Arlington

The Summer Laureate program will once again be offered this summer. This program, specifically
designed for advanced learners, is a challenging and fast-paced program for students who
demonstrate creativity, rapid learning, inquisitiveness, self-direction, and a desire for an academic
experience in the summer. Enriching academic activities will emphasize learning content through
concepts and critical and creative thinking.
Grade level instructional concepts will be as follows:




Kindergarten: Environment with a focus on the sights and sounds of the city versus the
country;
Grade 1: Flight: a look at flight in nature and man-made flight;
Grade 2: Movement: a look at movement in humans and animals to mechanical man-mad
movement;
Grade 3: Structure: a simulation focused on how a town’s structure is impeded by an
earthquake and must rebuild the physical, social, and governmental structures;
Grade 4: Future: an investigation into future human life on a space station.

The UVA Summer Enrichment Program is a two-week residential program for students enrolled in 4th –
10th grade. This program emphasizing the development of research skills, critical thinking, creativity and
problem-solving skills. This has a competitive application process and a limited number of students are
accepted. ( There are three 2-week sessions.)

Teenagers interested in writing work with professional authors in a workshop setting. The focus is on
nurturing talented writers with an artistic vision.

A wide variety of learning opportunities are available to gifted students from preschool to 9th grade
educational levels. The courses emphasize the development of problem-solving skills and higher level
thinking skills and are designed to supplement rather than supplant regular school curriculum. 95th
percentile on a nationally normed standardized ability or achievement test in the course area and
recommendation of a school official are required.
