Clinical Documentation
Instructor assisted
Instructors, practice partners or patients and room assignments. Operatories will be preset, decontaminated and re-set by the dental assistant. You m ay observe and assist if you
need the experience.
Peer practice assignment: 45 minutes each clinician-follow steps below and focus on time
management. Divide the 45 minutes into treatment segments (assess, treat, evaluate and
document)
1. Practice: seating, positioning, use of air/water syringe, saliva ejector, lighting, indirect vision
2. Practice: review medical history, vital signs, EOE/IOE, OCS and present findings
3. Select ONE quadrant: use explorer, mirror and probe to examine teeth and record dental and
periodontal findings. Check occlusion.
4. Debride deposits using power and manual instrumentation. Polish as needed.
5. Self-evaluate. Peer coaching encouraged

General Information:
Reading assignments are self directed and should align with the course agenda. Utilize
dental websites or purchase the recommended texts at pls.org.
The goal is to have each course participant practice various clinical skills, performing
standard of care, using professional judgment, and demonstrate critical thinking. PLS also
aims for course participants to practice ergonomics. Please review the course objectives to
determine the full scope of the program.
During lab and clinical practice sessions, the group will be divided into teams and or
partners with an instructor and room assignment. Throughout the course, the instructors
will work with different teams or stay with the same team depending on circumstances,
assessed needs and expertise.
Shared Patient Practice
Some course participants will be paired up to share a patient. Each instructor will stay with
one team during a session. Patient treatment will be assigned the UR & LL and UL & LR
quads.
Some course participants may have extensive experience and feel comfortable to practice
independently and others may need close supervision. Some participants may want to
spend more type with instrumentation on models before seeing a patient. The instructor’s
will identify the participant’s needs for specific attention at the course and assign skills
accordingly.
