c OLW NEWS 2013 Tel: Email: Issue: 34 9460 6684 principal@olwkingsbury.catholic.edu.au Date: Monday, November 18 Dear Parents & Families, Thank you to the parents and students who attended our Working Bee yesterday. A large amount of work was completed in our garden beds to enhance our school as well as some internal changes and modifications. I am very grateful for your ongoing support and assistance. Our next Prep 2014 Orientation Session will be on the afternoon of Thursday November 21 from 3.00p.m. – 3.30p.m. This is a Story Time session in the School Library for the students which will be led by Mrs. McKinley. We are currently in the process of finalising structures for 2014. Next year we will have two Prep/1 classes, a Year 2/3 class, a Year 3/4 class, and two Year 5/6 classes. This structure is the same as 2013 and provides six classes with approximately 24 – 25 students in each. Staffing arrangements are still be finalised, and you will be notified as soon as all arrangements are confirmed. As part of our structure for 2014 we have considered and reviewed the best use of all learning Spaces in the School. As a result, we are making some changes to where classes are located and how some spaces are used. Our Library will be moving to the current Prep/1 area. This will enable direct access from the yard, and keep all our specialist areas together. Our Prep/1 classes will take over the current Year 2/3 & 3/4 rooms, our Year 2/3 & 3/4 will take over the Year 5/6 rooms, and our Year 5/6 classes will move to the current Library space. This will keep all our Learning Areas together as a group and provide the opportunity for our senior students to work more closely with, and model to, our youngest students. At our Working Bee yesterday we also worked on modifying the old Computer Lab into a Resource Area for Teacher Reference books and equipment, which has drawn together things that were previously kept in four different areas of the school. The room still also provides a work area for staff, a meeting space for various school activities, and ICT based activities. At our Education Board meeting last Wednesday evening we worked on the development of an OLW School App. This app will provide the opportunity for instant communication and information sharing with parents at a number of levels and will also provide the opportunity for some two way contact. It will also work across a number of platforms including iphone, ipad, android, PC and Mac. More information about how to join the OLW app will be sent home in the coming week. Last week all students received some information from the P & F about the Walkathon we are holding on Wednesday December 4. We have asked that each child tries to find ten people who would sponsor them for a $1 donation. In this way, it does not put strain on families, extended family members, or neighbours and friends. If each child can achieve this, then we will raise over $1500. Some people may wish to sponsor your child for more than $1 which is quite okay also. All students who return their pledge card with money raised will go into a class draw for a $20 itunes gift card, and the class that raise the most money per student will receive a free hot chip lunch. So please support this fundraiser. Year 5/6 Summer Sport is away this Friday versus St Joseph the Worker Primary School. Matches start at 1.00pm and supporters are most welcome. Saint Vincent De Paul – Christmas Appeal: Hampers and gifts will be distributed to our clients on Saturday 21st December. The tree will be erected on 30th November. Tags on the tree will refer to clients by age and gender. Please attach these tags to the gift parcel. Donations of food will be appreciated. Appeal envelopes will also be placed on the tree. Thank you. VCE STUDENTS: We pray for all the VCE students that are currently working hard. Air-conditioning for our Church: A realistic quote of $23,000 has been obtained for the airconditioning of our church. We will proceed only if the money is made available from donations and $10,000 church money. My thoughts: 1. Air-conditioning will complete the church 2. Our older and younger parishioners will benefit from it 3. Parishioners who wish air-conditioning will contribute what they can afford 4. Parishioners who don’t wish air-conditioning will not contribute 5. Air-conditioning will not become cheaper to install in the future 6. Please consider this proposal not only from a personal need but from others needs as well. Comments and responses are invited and needed to gauge everyone’s thoughts on the proposal. Thanks.
