It is most commonly seen in adolescent or young adult women. Some of these patients have childhood history of DDH but majority do not and the adolescent form may have a distinct genetic and environmental risk factors than infant DDH. Clinical and radiographic methods of assessing these patients will be presented as well as the pearls on safe surgical correction using the modified Bernese periacetabular osteotomy technique. Finally, some controversies regarding the effect of surgery on the natural history of osteoarthritis development in these hips will be discussed. Additionally, there may be associated instability of the joint as well. The nature of this complex deformity will be illustrated. Indications and surgical techniques to correct this complex deformity will be outlined. Klane White, MD “Perthes Disease: An Evidence Based Review” Despite being described almost one hundred years ago, our fundamental understanding of the etiology and treatment of Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease (LCPD) is still relatively rudimentary. This presentation will discuss the preliminary results of an evidence based review of the literature on LCPD. This review will be used to identify the most pertinent gaps in knowledge on LCPD and as a starting point and platform for the development of future research endeavors by the International Perthes Study Group. “Femoroacetabular Impingement and Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis – Does impingement exist? When and how should we treat it?” Thomas Jinguji, MD “Concussion: Initial Recognition, Management, and Ongoing Controversies” Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a common hip deformity that is thought to cause osteoarthritis (OA). Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a prototypical childhood disorder that leads to FAI. The role of impingement in the development of OA remains controversial. Available evidence will be discussed. Additionally, contemporary open and arthroscopic surgical techniques for correcting impingement and its indications will be discussed. Brief review of sports concussion definition, diagnosis and management tailored for the practicing pediatric orthopedic surgeon. “Adolescent Perthes Disease – Deformity Characteristics and Treatment Methods” Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD) is an adolescent form of osteonecrosis that leads to femoral head deformity. It can lead to intra-articular as well as extraarticular impingement. Questions? Antoinette Lindberg, MD “Early vs. Late Presenting Developmental Hip Dysplasia: Demographic and Access-to-Care Factors Affecting Timing of Presentation” The timing of diagnosis for developmental hip dysplasia can make the difference between a few weeks of Pavlik harness treatment and multiple surgical procedures. Despite widespread newborn screening exams and selective ultrasonography, there are still patients who are not diagnosed with dysplasia until after the age of six months or later. Multiple demographic and social factors were investigated to uncover what factors were associated with delays in diagnosis and treatment.
