Construction Assessment PSC Geometry Honors Name_______________________ Period____ Directions: For this assignment, you will need to learn and practice the 7 basic constructions. This assignment will be graded on completion, accuracy and creativity (see rubric at end of assignment). You are to do this entire project on your own with NO COLLABORATION. You have many tutorials and other webpages to help guide you. You may see me if you are having problems. Be sure what you turn in is complete and neatly done. All constructions MUST be done in pencil. Do not erase marks unless they are mistakes – all necessary arcs and markings MUST be there. Any explanations should be in complete sentences with attention to proper spelling, grammar, and usage. Be sure to print this assignment out because you will need to write/mark on some of it. Materials needed: Compass Straight edge Pencil Colored pencils or crayons Paper Basic Constructions: Congruent segment Perpendicular bisector Perpendicular from point on a line Perpendicular from point not on a line Congruent angle Angle bisector Line parallel to a given line Using the list of resources below, review/learn and practice the constructions listed above. You should take notes and practice until you have mastered each one. You should make a construction section in your notebook so that when all of your papers are returned you can keep them in your notebook as a reference. We will use these basic constructions throughout the year. Resources for learning constructions: Brightstorm: www.brightstorm.com/math/geometry - there is a whole section for constructions Mathisfun: http://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/constructions.html - click on links for the constructions you want to see GeoOnline: http://teachers.henrico.k12.va.us/math/HCPSgeo/G-4-1.html There are links for Construction Videos, or look at any other information/websites there that may be helpful. Flipchart: We will view this later. You can practice using construction tools with this software. Explanations are found here as well. Important Dates: 12/4/14 Evidence that you have practiced the basic constructions on the notes page *HW grade* 12/19/14 1/9/15 1/15/15 Part1: Final work due (#1-12 with all work shown and in pencil) 40% Test grade Part2: Final work due (#1-9 with all work shown and in pencil) 40% Test grade Part3: Final work due 20% Test grade See the rubric for details. Construction Assessment Part 1: Due 12/19/14 Name_______________________ Period____ Use the following segments and angles for the problems that follow. Do #1-10 on separate paper with the heading “Part 1”, with each one numbered and labeled clearly. S N O W H L D I A Construction Assessment Name_______________________ Period____ Part 2: 1/9/15 In this section, you will use the basic constructions to construct figures we have studied so far this year. You may need to refer to your vocabulary and/or notes. Again, all constructions should be done on separate paper, with each one labeled. For each construction, write a brief description of your method. This assignment will count as part of a test grade. 1. Construct a b with transversal t . Begin by drawing a and t using a straightedge, and placing point T on the transversal. Based on what you know about parallel lines and corresponding angles, construct b that goes through T so that the lines are parallel. 2. Construct c d with transversal v . Begin by drawing c and v using a straightedge, and placing Q on the transversal. Based on what you know about parallel lines and alternate interior angles, construct d that goes through Q so that the lines are parallel. B B 3. Construct a right isosceles triangle 4. Construct an equilateral triangle 5. Construct a square 6. Construct a regular hexagon 7. For each of the following, construct BRK based on the segments and/or angles given. State which congruent triangles theorem/postulate you used for each (SAS, AAS, ASA, HL, SSS). Use the segments and angles below for this section. Construction Assessment Name_______________________ Period____ Part 3: Due 1/15/15 Now is time to have some fun and let the creativity flow! You are to use each of the basic constructions at least once to design a logo, create a floor tile or fabric design, or design a building. This should be something original (that YOU created). The only tools you should use for this are a compass and a straightedge on a blank sheet of paper. You may decorate once you are done with colored pencils and/or crayons as long as the construction markings are still clearly visible. Along with your creation, on a separate sheet of paper, you are to include a written portion that identifies and describes all angles and triangles, along with a description of what you have constructed, why, and what you have learned by completing this assignment.
