APUSH – Revolution Debate
Students will be working to prepare for a full class debate on the following
question:
“Did the Revolution secure British rights or did it create an American national
identity?”
In preparation for the debate, students will be assigned ONE of two sides:
1. The Revolution primarily secured rights that had been demanded of the
British
2. The Revolution primarily created a new American national identity
Students will be required to provide:
1. One primary source supporting their side
2. One secondary source supporting their side
Sources do not necessarily have to be written documents (can be an image)
Sources provided by students will have to provide the following information:
1. Author, title of source, and date of publication
2. Relevant excerpt from the source that pertains to the debate
3. One copy of the sources for you during the debate, and one for the
teacher
NO SOURCES CAN BE COPIED PER SIDE!
During the debate, students will be graded based on the following:
1. Understanding of the concepts centering on the debate topic
2. Ability to reference sources provided
3. Ability to rebut points of view from the opposing side
4. Frequency of participation
5. Respectfulness and civility in discourse
