Research Log
Students need to identify a specific topic for research. They will conduct a search using the
appropriate online database. Research Log should contain methodology and steps with results
obtained, while performing the search.
Methodology will include,
 Identify the proper online resources to search
 Recognize the keywords
 Find synonyms and related terms
 Use Boolean Operators
 Use phrase searching and truncation
 Mention number of hits retrieved in each step
 Refine the search until you get proper results.
To Find A Book
 Go to myuos portal , click on Library page
 From Find A Book Category
 Select the Online Catalog for PRINT Books
 Select the E-Book Databases (UOS only) for Electronic Books, then search Ebrary &
McGraw-Hill Access Medicine
Example of a “Research Log”







I use the online catalog to search for Print Books available in the library,
In the Keyword search,
 I searched for the keyword “Insomnia” : retrieved 11 records
To get more results, I will use the keywords / synonyms : sleep disorder
o In the Keyword Search
 I searched for (sleep and disorders) : retrieved 48 records
Not all of the results were relevant to my topic
 I ran the search with the phrase “sleep disorders” : retrieved 27 records
To get all titles available in the library where I can find information on Insomnia, I will
search for
 Insomnia OR “sleep disorder” : Results 36
Select 3-5 titles relevant to the topic
Make a book titles list. Print the “Research Log” with the “Books’ List” and submit
before 29/9/2013.







Search; E-brary Database McGraw-Hill Access Medicine Database
Prepare the “Research Log”.
Select 3-5 book titles relevant to your topic.
Make a Book titles List.
Print the “E-Book Databases Research Log” and E-Books’ List.
Submit before 29/9/2013
