You are invited to take part in Chivalry Day in Social Studies on Friday, February 28th To enhance our studies of the Early Middle Ages and Feudalism, we will be engaging in an event celebrating chivalry and loyalty that characterized the feudal age. You will be given the role of a serf, vassal, knight, lord, or monarch that lives and works on Mangold Manor. You only have to worry about your role on Chivalry Day itself, it will not affect your project topic or who you work with. The Project: With one partner or independently, create a poster dedicated to one of the following topics. Your poster should be rich with visual aids and include a 3-paragraph (typed) report answering the essential questions that go along with your topic. You may use your Journeys Across Time book, History Alive digital text, and other resources at home to work on your research. You must cite all work you complete on a separate works cited document. Projects are due on the day of February 28th, Chivalry Day. This is mainly an outof-class project, but you will have some time to work on it during class. Grades will be individual. If you work with a partner, please bring your own report on your chosen topic (a pair of students would have 2 reports on their poster). The project is 30 points (see rubric). 1. 2. 3. 4. Life on a Feudal Manor a. EQ: What was life like on a feudal manor, and what roles did serfs, vassals, knights and lords play? How was each role significant to the welfare of the manor? The Knights Code and Chivalry, Coats of Arms a. EQ: How did Chivalry and the Knights’ Code impact the responsibilities of knights? How did Coats of Arms become significant in the Feudal Age? Castles and Invasions during the Feudal Age a. EQ: Why did Castles play a prominent role in Feudal Europe? What invading forces threatened feudal Europe (and where)? Feudalism – Good or Bad? a. EQ: What are positive and negative aspects of feudalism? Develop an argument after comparing and contrasting both sides. The Presentation/Chivalry Day: Instead of presenting to the class, we will have a gallery walk event to kick off our Chivalry Day festivities. You will display your poster for passersby to view and learn about your topic. You will have an extra credit opportunity to dress up as your assigned ‘role’ (i.e. serf, knight, lord) on the day of the presentations and stand by your poster to present. Costumes should be consistent with school dress code (see agenda books) and related to your appropriate role. Even if you are not dressing up, you are still expected to obey the Code of Honor that every Knight would follow in a feudal society.
