Provide backup for Geologist conducting bathymetric studies and sediment profiling of lakes/rivers. Page 1 15. Please describe the assigned duties, percent of time spent performing each duty, and what is done to complete each duty. List the duties from most important to least important. The total percentage of all duties performed must equal 100 percent. Duty 1 General Summary of Duty 1 % of Time 30% Plan and conduct soil, groundwater and soil vapor investigations with the assistance of geological technicians. Develop detailed reports based on the investigation. Individual tasks related to the duty. Plan and direct the field activities and assure site access. Develop a detailed plan of action in the field by consulting with the Supervisor and the assigned geological technicians, district staff. Develop a health and safety plan for the site. Determine the right combination of field investigation equipment needed for the site; truck mounted drill rig, all terrain drill rig, tracked Geoprobe. Identify the location where monitoring wells should be installed and the screened depth. Take notes of soil lithology based on soil cuttings and split spoon/core samples. Keep borehole geophysical logs. Conduct in-situ permeability tests, determine groundwater flow direction, conduct soil gas surveys. Identify the substances to be analyzed by the laboratory and the methods to be used for the analysis. Conduct in-situ analysis of groundwater (conductivity, pH). Assess results of field screening of samples to identify when and where samples should be collected for laboratory analysis. Write highly technical reports interpreting and summarizing the results of investigations. Duty 2 General Summary of Duty 2 % of Time 30% Conduct bathymetric studies and sediment profiling of lakes and rivers. Maintain an underwater video data collection. Individual tasks related to the duty. Plan the details of investigations of rivers and lakes to determine the bottom relief and for sediment profiling. Setup a complex sonar system to collect sonar reading data for computer records. Adjust sonar readings and fine tune per actual measurements. Direct the transect interval, boat speed, and direction. Oversee collection of real time GPS data. Conduct sediment profiling. This requires sonar readings matched with sediment samples with a VibraCore. Upload field data into a computer program to analyze data. Correct data points for errors and anomalies. Add mapping data of shoreline. Create a report and detailed chart of the lake/river bottom contour and/or sediment profile. Run an underwater video camera, direct direction of camera travel, and upload video data. Interpret video data. Edit the video content for final reports and/or PowerPoint presentations. Duty 3 General Summary of Duty 3 % of Time 20% Plan and conduct geophysical investigations and develop reports based on the investigations. Individual tasks related to the duty. Use geophysical instruments that include ground penetrating radar, seismic, electromagnetic conductivity, electrical resistivity, magnetics, and metal detection. Analyze the results for anomalies and prepare a technical report of the findings. Page 2 Duty 4 General Summary of Duty 4 % of Time 10% Provide backup on Vapor Intrusion studies. Individual tasks related to the duty. Install vapor pins and monitoring points. Sample points/pins. Duty 5 General Summary of Duty 5 % of Time 10% Other duties as assigned by Supervisor and Division management. Individual tasks related to the duty. Participate in committees. Fill in for other geologists on short notice. 16. Describe the types of decisions made independently in this position and tell who or what is affected by those decisions. The responsibilities mandate that the position make decisions on all aspects of an assigned Hydrogeological, geophysical, and bathymetric investigation. These decisions include choosing specific hydrogeological/geophysical technique(s), deciding on the number and depth of soil borings and monitor wells, the transect interval and boat speed for bathymetry, and when and where to take sediment samples with the VibraCore. Public health, safety, and welfare are affected by these decisions. 17. Describe the types of decisions that require the supervisor’s review. Complex site investigations. Purchasing of supplies and equipment for field operations. Issues not clearly spelled out in the Unit, Division, Department policies/procedures. 18. What kind of physical effort is used to perform this job? What environmental conditions is this position physically exposed to on the job? Indicate the amount of time and intensity of each activity and condition. Refer to instructions. The position is about four months of the year in the field and eight months in the office. Office work is with the computer and involves a lot of sitting. Field work can be in inclement weather, in any season, and requires the following effort: Regularly lift objects weighing 50 to 100 pounds. Periodically carry heavy equipment for hours at a time. Work at sites of contamination and incur possible risk of exposure to hazardous substances. Work around high-pressure gas lines, high voltage lines, both buried and overhead. Work on a boat (with a crew) for long periods in lakes, rivers, and along the Great Lakes shoreline. Though the boat does not go out in inclement weather, there is always a risk of falling overboard and into the water. There is no protection from the sun on hot sunny days, and the water further reflects the rays onto the boat occupants. There is a lot of standing and walking over uneven and difficult terrain. There is some kneeling, bending, when collecting samples. 19.
