Animal Science - 2015-2016 Syllabus

Course: Animal Science

Course Description: Animal Science develops basic knowledge and skills pertaining to livestock identification, selection, nutrition, reproduction and genetics, health management, and marketing of farm animals commonly produced in Kentucky. The latest production technologies as well as biotechnological applications will be included. Leadership development will be provided through

FFA. Each student will be expected to have a supervised agricultural experience program.

Instructors have an open door policy, you are welcome to come and talk to us any time we are on campus and not in class. If we’re not on campus feel free to email us and we will do our best to respond as soon as possible.

Course Objectives:

Students will be able to identify the different breeds of dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, swine, and poultry, and be able to list characteristics of each.

 Students will be able to describe types of animal breeding.

Students will be able to describe and diagram the reproductive tract of various livestock breeds.

 Students will be able to design proper housing facilities for the various livestock breeds.

 Students will be able to list the various feeds consumed by livestock.

 Students will be able to list common treatment and prevention practices for livestock diseases and health problems.

Attendance &

Make-up Policy: The student is responsible for attending classes on a regular basis. If classes are missed,

regardless of the reason, the STUDENT is responsible for contacting the instructor before or after class to receive their make-up work. Students may also email the teacher to receive their make-up work. All excused absence make-up work can be made up.

Students will receive the same number of days that you were absent, plus an additional

1 (one) day, to complete and turn in make-up work. Announced exams, major projects, or term papers for which you had an adequate time to study or prepare shall be made up on the day of return. Make-up work may be permitted for a student with an unexcused absence if the principal, after consultation with the teacher, approves the make-up work. Every day there will be a participation grade. Students will have an alternative assignment given by the teacher to compensate for the participation grade.

Academic Honesty: Cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, or helping others to commit these acts will not be tolerated. Academic dishonesty will result in severe disciplinary action including, but not limited to, failure of the student assessment item. Students will receive a zero (0) on an item they cheated on. For example: copying information from the internet is plagiarism if appropriate credit is not given.

Materials Needed: - Closed toe shoes

- Notebook paper

- Long pants (jeans or khakis)

- 3 – ring binder

Laboratory: This course will require students to participate in laboratory activities, work experiences and field trips. Students must have a safety contract with the appropriate signatures on file with the teacher before participating in any out of class activity. A school insurance policy and/or a private policy is required for students taking this course.

Dress Code:

Food and drink are NOT allowed in the classroom or labs.

We will follow the dress code policy in the handbook.

Cell Phone Policy: No electronic devices are allowed in the classroom or lab unless it is permitted by the teacher for a project. If the device is seen or heard the device will be confiscated and handed over to the principal on the first offense and a parent will have to pick up the device. On the second violation the device will be confiscated and returned to the student’s parent at the end of three (3) school days. Third offense the device will be confiscated and returned to the student’s parent at the end of five (5) days. We will follow all the rules in the student handbook regarding this topic.

KOSSA:

All students will be required to pay $16 for class fees at Locust Trace Agriscience Center.

The intra-curricular student organization that goes with all agriculture classes is the FFA.

All students enrolled in agriculture classes are strongly encouraged to be a member of the FFA; however, it is not mandatory. The dues for the FFA will be $20.

The Kentucky Occupational Skill Standards Assessment helps students become Career Ready.

Students must take three (3) classes in a specific pathway to become preparatory. Animal

Science is a stepping stone to the Animal Science KOSSA. Students must pass the KOSSA exam with a 70% to be declared Career Ready.

Furthermore, I understand that late assignments will NOT be accepted and that I will not be allowed to make up exams until prearrangements have been made with the teacher. Additionally, I am aware of what academic dishonesty is and what constitutes cheating and plagiarism. I also understand that the first occurrence of academic dishonesty in this course will result in an automatic zero on that assignment or exam.

By signing this document I agree to abide by all rules and expectations outlined within this syllabus.

Furthermore, I agree that if I miss class for ANY reason it is my responsibility to contact the instructor

IMMEDIATELY upon my return and acquire any missed assignments. Notes from missed classes will also be my responsibility.
