ALAN TURING FELLOWS – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)
ELIGIBILITY

What if my fellowship sits across several disciplines, which should I select?
You should indicate all disciplines that you think are relevant to the proposed research in the
research statement.

Can I apply for a fellowship even though I am not a UK National citizen?
There are no nationality restrictions imposed by ATI on who can apply for a fellowship.

I have been working in industry since obtaining my PhD can I still apply for a fellowship?
Applications are welcomed from candidates from a variety of backgrounds and experiences
as long as they meet key requirements described in the call document. Consideration will
additionally be given to applicants who have taken a non-standard career path after their
PhD.
LETTER OF SUPPORT

Can letter of support be included in the application?
Letters of support should not be included with your application. You should provide up to
three references as part of your application.
RESOURCES

Can I claim the cost of relocating to the UK?
Relocation costs will be considered for successful candidates on a case by case basis
depending on individual circumstances. The applicant should give an indication as to
whether they want to claim for relocation costs in their application.
TEACHING

How many hours of teaching can I do if I am a 100% FTE fellow?
The Alan Turing Fellows will not generally be required to carry out any teaching duties.
EXTENSION

How long can a fellowship be extended for?
Fellowships will be awarded for three years initially, with the potential of an up to 2-year
extension subject to review.

How long can a fellowship be extended for to cover maternity, paternity and adoption
leave?
Extension to cover maternity, paternity and adoption leave is up to 12 months, depending
on the actual leave taken and the host institution policy.

Can my fellowship be put on hold?
Requests for putting the fellowship on hold will be considered in the case of maternity,
paternity, adoption and/or sickness. Other cases will be considered on a case by case basis,
depending on circumstances.
TRANSFER FELLOWSHIPS

Where will my fellowship be hosted?
Normally all Alan Turing fellows will be based at the British Library. A University host will also
be assigned to every fellow. The allocation of fellows to host institutions will occur after
candidates have been selected. They will be allocated taking into account scientific fit,
personal preferences, and balance across the ATI from across JV partners.
While JV universities will host the fellowships, candidates will work primarily at the ATI
based at the British Library.

Could I transfer my fellowship to another host university?
Once allocated to a university, ATI fellowships would only be reallocated under exceptional
circumstances, subject to permission from the director.
GENERAL QUESTIONS

When is the deadline for submission?
The deadline for submission is 20th December 2015. Applications submitted after that date
will not be considered in the first call.

How do I submit my application?
Applications must be submitted by email via fellowship@turing.ac.uk. Applicants who
are unable to apply online should contact us by telephone on 0300 770 1912

What documents do I need to provide?
Each application requires:

CV
Research proposal
Any exceptional resources necessary to achieve your programme (1 page)
Separate letter indicating you preferred host institution (optional)

How much detail should there be in my research proposal?
Guidance for applicants is provided in the call. Emphasis should be placed on conveying your
vision and ambitions for the research, not on communicating a detailed programme of work.

Will there be other fellowship opportunities available?
Further calls for Alan Turing Fellows will be published in future years but timings for these
have yet to be fixed.

Is there a maximum amount I can request in terms of additional resources?
There is no upper limit to the amount of additional resources you can ask for. However
resources must be commensurate with the ambition of the research vision being proposed
in your application and costs must be fully justified.

Can I apply for a part time fellowship?/ Would I be able to go part time?
Unfortunately due to the nature of the award this is not a part-time post, however flexible
working arrangements will be considered on a case by case basis (e.g. remote
working/compressed hours)

How does the Alan Turing Institute assess the applications it receives?
The assessment process is clearly laid out in the call document. Expert assessors are used at
every stage of the process. Those experts are drawn from the national and international
research community (primarily from academia, industry, government and/or charitable
sector) across data science relevant disciplines. The Programme Committee of the Alan
Turing Institute is responsible for agreeing the make-up of the various assessment panels
used to select the Alan Turing Fellows.

How will I be notified of the outcome of my application?
Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by email in the first instance.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview at an appropriate time. Further advice
on specific requirements and guidance will be provided to those candidates invited to
interview.
