AHEAD Board of Directors Meeting Minutes May 28, 2014 Conference Call Present: Jamie Axelrod (JA), Bea Awoniyi (BA), Terra Beethe (TB), Gaeir Dietrich (GD), Sam Goodin (SG), Paul Grossman (PG), Scott Lissner (SL), Kristie Orr (KO), Stephan Smith (SS), Katheryne Staeger-Wilson (KSW) Melanie Tucker-Thompson (MTT) joined at 4:30 pm Not Present: Michael Johnson (MJ) The Board formally came to order at 3:34 pm EST on May 28, 2014. A summary of motions and discussion follows: Abridged Edition of The Law of Disability Discrimination Text by Ruth Colker & Paul Grossman o AHEAD members will have opportunity to purchase shortened version through a collaboration with Lexis-Nexis at a significantly reduced cost Discussion on certification of emotional support or service animals Adam Meyer brought topic to BOD for discussion. He was seeking some guidance from OCR on technical standards o Meyer was encouraged to write article for ALERT. Take topic to Professional Development Committee to discuss focused training or webinar on emotional support animals’ certifications etc. Letter of support for CUNY Degree Proposal The CUNY School of Professional Studies (SPS) proposes to develop a 30-credit Master of Science degree in Disability Services in Higher Education. The M.S. degree is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to provide legally mandated accommodations to students with disabilities in higher education settings. The coursework includes theoretical, conceptual and practical information that will provide students with sound philosophical grounding in addition to building skills that they will apply in the field. o Proposal is currently pending approval by the School of Professional Studies Curriculum Committee The National College Testing Association (NCTA) Guideline/Best Practice Task Force Creation Steve Saladin of NCTA would like to develop a joint task force with NCTA and AHEAD members (3-4 members each) o Group would work on creating guidelines and identify best practices to foster the collaborative work of Disability Resource and Testing Offices Standing Committee Update BA provided update on the Standing Committees o Member Development SC o Technology SC o Diversity SC Will host International reception at AHEAD 2014 on Thursday, July 17th at 5:30 Working with Jeremy Jarrell to establish a secure website for committee members to exchange messages Submitted recommendations regarding definition of diversity, non-discrimination statement and infusing specific language on diversity in AHEAD Professional Standards BOD to send all feedback to BA by June 20, 2014 AHEAD May 2014 Conference Call Minutes Affiliate Update TB provided update on affiliates o o o Spring Conference Call – April 14, 2014 Reauthorization process completed with new guidelines for Complimentary Registration Benefit AHEAD 2014 Affiliate Events o Affiliate Breakfast, Thursday, July 17 @ 7:30-10:00 am Agenda Pending 25 representatives using complimentary registration Booth Scheduling Booth Workers Raffling off AHEADHEDGE HOG Handing out AHEAD 2015 Promo Items Affiliate/SIG Quarterly Report Template update Draft shared with affiliates during conference call Affiliates representatives provided favorable comments for document biyearly TB made a motion that the affiliate summary report be accepted. Motioned carried. o Discussion of Term Limit definitions/parameters Several AHEAD members requested that TB bring topic to the BOD’s attention SS stated bylaw changes would need a membership vote SG volunteered to review bylaws. BOD members should send feedback to SG note for further discussion at July BOD meeting Food Allergy College Summit KO reported on the second college summit held by the College Food Allergy Program on April 11-13, 2014 at the University of Arizona o o o o The summit brought together peer organizations and food allergy experts as well as representatives from university dining services, health services, disability services and resident services Discussions along with the outcome of workshops will form the framework for best-practice guidelines and other tools that will be piloted by at least a half-dozen colleges in the coming year SL and KO are on working groups to develop guidance on working with students with food allergy FARE has been encouraged to submit an ALERT article and presentation proposal for AHEAD 2015 2014 NCAA Inclusion Forum JA was invited to attend forum on May 1-3 in Orlando, FL o o The NCAA Inclusion Forum brings together intercollegiate athletics leaders passionate about improving the educational and professional environment for student-athletes, coaches and staff. Sessions engage on a broad range of topics related to policy, research and best practices for racial and ethnic minorities, women, international student-athletes, LGBTQ and disability-access to sport Working with Marci Ridpath of Indianapolis Think Tank Conference Update SS provided update on AHEAD 2014 o o Hyatt hotel block is at 98% full, Sheraton’s block is 100% full, and Residence Inn’s block (1st overflow hotel) is at 78%. Registration has 589 attendees whereas in was 465 in 2012 as of today Budget Update SS provided budget update as of 5/20/14 Membership Update SS provided membership update as of 4/30/14 o AHEAD continues its upward trajectory of membership growth Non-member institutions, bureau of Indian Affairs is over 6% AHEAD May 2014 Conference Call Minutes Odds and Ends SL provided following announcements o AHEAD 2014 o Donna Johnson to lead Conference Committee Robert Plienis and Danette Saylor will serve as Program Co-Chairs Jamie Axelrod to assist with 25th Anniversary activities BOD Appointments Paul Grossman appointed full term beginning July 20, 2014.
