Hours of Work: Full-time (36.25 hours per week) Location: Faculty of Engineering, Unbiversity Park Campus Reporting to: Prof Mark Sumner The Purpose of the New Role: The successful candidates will work with industrial partners to develop and validate equipment for monitoring and controlling electrical energy consumption within several residential dwellings with the aim of benefitting the community energy costs. The researcher will specifically create a modelling platform to evaluate the effectiveness of the control algorithms and will then develop a real time emulation of the community using resources based in the FlexElec laboratory to ensure the externally developed equipment works safely and correctly. Candidates must have (or be about to obtain) a PhD, or equivalent in a relevant area, together with the relevant research skills, knowledge and published papers on electrical energy management, Demand Side Management, Load Shifting and interfacing battery energy storage to the grid. The project involves strong academic and industrial collaboration. Main Responsibilities 1. 2. 2. 3. 4. 5. a) To identify and develop models for commonly used electrical equipment within domestic dwellings, to create electrical consumption models for small communities. b) To interface the control actions of the monitoring system to the residential consumption models to assess the controller performance through simulation. c) To port the electrical consumption models to a real time control platform (which employs NI and Labview technology) and develop interfaces to real control hardware (developed by one of the industrial partners). d) To test and validate the operation of the control hardware (developed by an industrial collaborator). Production of reports, publications, presentations and travel to meetings and/or outreach to the industry, scientific community. Maintenance of lab equipment and training of other researchers and students in the safe use of the equipment. Liaison meetings with project sponsor and its subsidiaries. Supervision of project students.
