Nomen: ___________________________________ Latin I Roman clothing project What to wear way back in the day…. They say don’t judge a book by its cover… but in Ancient Rome everybody was judged on what they wore. A Roman’s clothes told a lot about the person who wore them and his or her position in society. You could tell whether you were looking at a child or legal adult, a slave or citizen, and a lower class plebeian or senator just by looking at the clothes a person had on. But how could you tell? What were the signs? Who wore what? It’s time to learn how to decode the Roman uniform. Looking on page 17 in your book and at sources on the World Wide Web (You can access good ones through the class web site!), you will learn much about clothing. You will then be ready to show (not just tell!) the class about what you have learned on __________________________________. Your job: Pick any one of the characters from our Ecce Romani book and research what s/he would have worn and what that tells us about her/him. Then find some way to visually demonstrate the information you have learned to the class. Options include: A. Drawing a picture of your Roman character and labelling the clothing B. Making Roman doll clothes for a poor lonely Barbie, Ken, etc. C. Making a Roman costume for yourself D. Making a Roman paper doll showing the different layers and items of clothing You will be graded on the following: Completeness: Your depiction includes all pertinent clothing items for your character. Accuracy: Your depiction shows accurate details & you know the names of clothing items when you present your costume to the class. Neatness: Your project looks like you spent time and effort on it. NOTA BENE: You do not need to sew for this project! The Romans seldom sewed. Most of their clothing was made by pinning, draping, and tying flat pieces of cloth (Think handkerchiefs, sheets, scraps of material...) in various arrangements. When the Romans did sew, you can get the look without needle and thread. Remember: This should be your creation! Do NOT tell Mater or Pater that they need to make you a costume!!!!
