Agreement on admission to organized research training (PhDdegree) – supplement to agreement on appointment as a PhD Research Fellow at the Department of Psychology (name)________________, (born)_____________, was appointed as a research fellow through a decision by the Department Board, (date)______________. The decision also implies admission to organized research training (PhD-programme). This document is a supplement to the agreement dated [dato]_____. The purpose with this supplement is to specify the responsibility for the research training in which the research fellow participates. The duty to report and inform The candidate and the supervisor shall have regular contact. They mutually obligate themselves to keep one another appraised of all circumstances relevant to the supervisory process. The parties commit themselves to investigate conditions that may prevent the supervision being conducted according to the applicable rights and duties. 2. Rights and obligations of PhD candidates and supervisors The PhD candidate shall: make reports or drafts or parts of the thesis available to the supervisor every six months/year, in accordance with the terms of the admissions contract. Parts of the thesis may be presented in connection with seminars, deliver annual progress reports to the department according to the current provisions, comply with research ethical principles for the subject area, and ensure that personal data are reported and dealt with in a proper manner, in accordance with the guidelines of the Norwegian Social Science Data Services (NSD), REC and the departments own research ethics committee and framework for research. follow the University of Oslo’s guidelines for attribution of credit in academic publications. Supervisors for each candidate shall: keep themselves informed of the progress of the candidate’s work and assess it in relation to the work plan, follow up on academic factors that may result in delayed completion of the organized research training, so that this can be completed within the nominal time, provide advice on the formulation and delimitation of the topic and research questions, help familiarize the candidate with the research literature and empirical data (library, archives etc.), discuss and evaluate hypotheses and methods, discuss results and their interpretation, discuss the preparation and completion of the mode of presentation (outline, literary form, documentation etc.), give guidance to the candidate on research ethical questions related to the thesis, ensure that the candidate participates in an active research community, including following up the candidate with regard to internal research seminars at which the candidate may present his/her preliminary thesis work, and assist in introducing the candidate to relevant external research communities, provide annual progress reports on the organized research training on the form provided for this purpose, follow up on any residential requirements and report if this is not being complied with, support in the reporting and proper handling of personal data, according to the guidelines of the Norwegian Social Science Data Services (NSD), follow the ethical guidelines for supervisors at UiO, discuss with the candidate beforehand if the supervisor wishes to co-author a thesis article, support the candidate by notifying the unit that the thesis will soon be ready for submission, so that the evaluation committee can be ready shortly after the thesis has been delivered. 3 The principal supervisor: Surname Forename(s) Place of work Phone at work E-mail Address Assistant supervisor – if appropriate: Surname Place of work Forename(s) Phone at work E-mail Address The total supervision is normally 180 hours, including preparation. If an assistant supervisor is appointed, there should be a separate agreement on the division of supervising hours between the principal and the assistant supervisor. Normal division is 120/60. If more co-supervisors, normal division 60/2, both individual agreements are fine. Both parties in the supervisory relationship are entitled to regular contact and information about the progress of the work. If a doctoral candidate or a supervisor has the opinion that the other party does not fulfil his/her obligations, or the supervisory relationship becomes unsatisfactory, it is his or her duty to take it up with the other party, and together try to find a solution to the problem. If no solution is found, the supervisor may on such grounds ask to be released from the supervision agreement, or the doctoral candidate may request that the new supervisor be appointed. Such requests shall go trough and be settled by the Department. 4 Annual report The candidate is obliged to give an annual report. Further details about annual reporting will be provided by the Departments administration. Deadline is October 1st each year.
