Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Mixtures Lab! Name: _____________________ Block: ____________ Date:__________ Experiment 1: Fill a clear drinking glass about halfway with water. Obtain a little bit of water-soluble dye, and place one drop gently on top of the water. Notice that as time elapses, the dye is slowly dissolved in the water. List your observations: (This may take several minutes for dispersal) Does the dye scatter throughout the liquid (forming a homogeneous solution), or is the mixture not the same throughout (forming a heterogeneous mixture)? Experiment 2: Take a test tube and 1/3 of the way up with water. Now add an equal amount of vegetable oil on top of the water. Put your thumb over the test tube and give the oil and water a good shake. After mixing the oil and water, let the test tube sit in the test tube wrack. List your observations: (This may take several minutes) Is this a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture? More specifically, what kind of mixture is this? Experiment 3: 1. Get a beaker, and fill the beaker with ½ cup of vegetable oil. Then mix in one teaspoon of vinegar. Note what happens: 2. Now use a beater to stir the vinegar and oil, then stop mixing. Stop and observe the mixture for a few minutes. Note what happens: 3.In another large beaker, add one teaspoon of vinegar and one egg yoke. Beat this egg mixture well. 4. Now add in another ½ cup of vegetable oil and a teaspoon of vinegar to the beaker with the egg mixture. Also add in the contents of the original beaker that already contained oil and vinegar. Beat all the materials together with the egg beater. Note what happens: What kind of mixture have you created? Any idea of what specific substance you have created that many people eat?
