There are two parts to this assignment – writing tasks and oral component.
DUE DATES
The oral component is to be completed in pairs. (Due Date: Thurs 9th June –
Rm 5 group, Friday 10th June – Rm 6 group)
The writing task is to be completed individually. (Due: Tues June 14th (Rm 6
group), Wed June 15th (Room 5 group)
Writing Tasks
1. Choose a traditional Japanese sport from the list below and research the
sport’s history, popularity inside and outside Japan and its famous
players.
Sumo Wrestling
Judo
Kendo
Karate
Ninjutsu
Kemari (Sort of like modern day hacky sack)
Kyudo (Japanese Archery)
2. Next research popular spectator and participant sports in Japan and
present pictures, graphs and charts that show what age group and
gender these sports are popular amongst. Where possible interview
Japanese penpals/friends about these sports. (Hint: I have added
Japanese friends of mine to my Facebook group so for extra marks join
up and ask them questions!!!)
Your findings should be presented in booklet form – typed OR handwritten
and include as much Japanese as possible – eg belt colours of martial arts,
headings, numbers etc. There should be one Japanese sentence on each page
using the NEW GRAMMAR WE HAVE LEARNT such as: けんどをすることが
むずかしいです。(Playing kendo is difficult) OR けんどをすることがで
きますか。(Can you do kendo?)

Oral Component
Choose a famous Japanese sports player and in pairs create a mock interview
with this player in front of the class. Include in the interview the following:
- Asking permission for the interview (See notes in your book)
- Words to keep the conversation flowing (See notes)
- Include at least 5 of the ‘key question words’ from your notes or on
page 129 of the text.
- Include real answers such as the sports player’s age, where they live,
how long they’ve played the sport, who they play the sport with, where
they play, other hobbies etc.
- Show your appreciation for the interview at the end. (See notes)
Where possible memorise your lines.
