B. Gospel stories:
October 19, Matthew 22:15-21: The Pharisees want to trap Jesus into taking sides on the
controversial question of paying Roman taxes. The Pharisees oppose paying taxes. Members of
Herod’s Roman party support paying taxes. Jesus traps his questioners by asking to see their coins.
Jesus examines the Roma coins and says, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is
God’s.”
October 26, Matthew 22:34-40: The Pharisees question Jesus on the Torah (the laws of Moses), for
the Pharisees taught the law. There were 613 Thou-shalt and thou-shall-not laws. The Pharisees
asked Jesus what laws were most important. Jesus says, “ Love the Lord your God with all your
heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest law (commandment.) “Love
your neighbor as yourself.” This is the second greatest law (commandment.)
November 2, John 6:37-40: The Feast of All Souls is a time we remember and pray for those who
have gone before us. It celebrates the communion of saints – all Christians of all time who belong to
the family of God and live in our hearts and memories forever. There are many saints among us, and
they walk the world incognito. Canonization is for the few; communion is for all.
November 9, John2:13-22: The Church celebrates a feast in honor of one of Christianity’s oldest
churches, St. John Lateran, the cathedral church of the bishop of Rome. In the Gospel Jesus’
followers witness the zeal and respect Jesus has for the Temple – God’s dwelling on earth.
