Reading and comprehension is taught through individual reading work plus
guided reading sessions in school as well as through integrated tasks within

Where possible, links are made between English units of work and the cross
curricular topic over the term.

captions independently.

independently.
This term Year 1 will be studying three cross curricular units of work.
I’m alive
How do we know that you are alive but a fire is dead? A fire can move and
grow. We can even ‘feed’ a fire with fuel to make it spread! There are many
ways of finding out what is alive and what is dead, as you will discover!
In Science, we’ll be finding out:
• Where we can find living things
• How living things move
Beverley Sargent,
Miss Louise
Collier
• How living things grow and change
• What all living things need
• How animals disguise themselves
In Geography we’ll be finding out:
• About places where plants and animals live
• About different places where we can live
• About animals that are endangered
In Art, we’ll be finding out:
• How to draw movement in animals and people
• How to create a still life picture
Seeing the Light
If there was no light, there would be no life on our planet. Light helps plants
to grow, it warms the planet, and it allows us to see all the wonders around
us.
In Art, we’ll be finding out:
• How to show light and dark in our drawings and paintings
• How artists have shown light and dark in their own paintings
In Geography, we’ll be finding out:
• About what causes day and night
• About countries that have very long summer days and very long winter
nights
• About different sources of light in our school and local area
In Science, we’ll be finding out:
• What seeds and plants need to grow
• About different light sources
• How some materials can reflect light
• How shadows are made

Sound
We will also be undertaking a short stand alone unit of work focusing on the
science of Sound and Hearing. In this unit children will develop their
understanding of the huge variety of sounds and sources of sound they
encounter. They will relate sounds to their sense of hearing and are introduced
to the idea that sounds travel away from a source. Work in this unit also offers
opportunities for children to relate understanding of sound and hearing to
everyday experiences.
ICT has been embedded into our curriculum and therefore all ICT skills will
be taught within other subject areas; this cross-curricular approach is designed
to further enhance children’s understanding and ability to transfer the ICT
skills that they learn.
Students will perform, compose and listen to music. They will learn to
sing, use percussion instruments and begin recorder skills. They will be
taught how to make improvements to their work.
Mathematics Children will be following UK national Mathematical Framework. Over the
course of the term they will cover Units A1, B1, C1, D1, E1 A2 and B2. These
