Curriculum Newsletter August-December Autumn Term 2013 Year 1 Subject and Teacher English Overview Miss Christy Melanson, Mrs Beverley Sargent, Miss Louise Collier CrossCurricular Units of Work Overview Miss Christy Melanson, Mrs Description Reading and comprehension is taught through individual reading work plus guided reading sessions in school as well as through integrated tasks within the units of work. Phonics and handwriting are taught through individualised programmes of study based on the children’s current level and next steps. Where possible, links are made between English units of work and the cross curricular topic over the term. Non-fiction To name the parts of an object, e.g computer or the body and to write simple captions independently. Fiction Stories with familiar settings. To say whether a story is fiction or non-fiction. Patterned stories: Author study Eric Carle. To write and draw the next event in a sequence of instructions with the support of a partner. Non-fiction To write at least three instructions in a well-rehearsed sequence independently. This term Year 1 will be studying three cross curricular units of work. I’m alive How do we know that you are alive but a fire is dead? A fire can move and grow. We can even ‘feed’ a fire with fuel to make it spread! There are many ways of finding out what is alive and what is dead, as you will discover! In Science, we’ll be finding out: • Where we can find living things • How living things move Beverley Sargent, Miss Louise Collier • How living things grow and change • What all living things need • How animals disguise themselves In Geography we’ll be finding out: • About places where plants and animals live • About different places where we can live • About animals that are endangered In Art, we’ll be finding out: • How to draw movement in animals and people • How to create a still life picture Seeing the Light If there was no light, there would be no life on our planet. Light helps plants to grow, it warms the planet, and it allows us to see all the wonders around us. In Art, we’ll be finding out: • How to show light and dark in our drawings and paintings • How artists have shown light and dark in their own paintings In Geography, we’ll be finding out: • About what causes day and night • About countries that have very long summer days and very long winter nights • About different sources of light in our school and local area In Science, we’ll be finding out: • What seeds and plants need to grow • About different light sources • How some materials can reflect light • How shadows are made ICT Overview Miss Christy Melanson, Mrs Beverley Sargent, Miss Louise Collier Music Overview Sound We will also be undertaking a short stand alone unit of work focusing on the science of Sound and Hearing. In this unit children will develop their understanding of the huge variety of sounds and sources of sound they encounter. They will relate sounds to their sense of hearing and are introduced to the idea that sounds travel away from a source. Work in this unit also offers opportunities for children to relate understanding of sound and hearing to everyday experiences. ICT has been embedded into our curriculum and therefore all ICT skills will be taught within other subject areas; this cross-curricular approach is designed to further enhance children’s understanding and ability to transfer the ICT skills that they learn. Students will perform, compose and listen to music. They will learn to sing, use percussion instruments and begin recorder skills. They will be taught how to make improvements to their work. Mathematics Children will be following UK national Mathematical Framework. Over the course of the term they will cover Units A1, B1, C1, D1, E1 A2 and B2. These Overview units will all focus on developing a variety of math skills. Recognise and order coins, find totals of sets of coins Pathway 1&2 Mandarin We will deliver pinyin study for the whole term. They will learn all the pinyin Overview letters, sounds and writings. Besides, they will learn how to read characters with pinyin. They will learn some basic strokes to enable them to learn simple Miss Rebecca Li, Chinese characters. Numbers & Telephone Numbers will be introduced to Mrs Maggie Li, students. They will also learn simple daily expressions. Miss Stacy Gao Pathway 4 We will deliver pinyin study for the whole term. They will learn all the pinyin letters, sounds and writing. Besides, they will learn how to spell pinyin. They will be aware of the different tones in Chinese, learn children's folk rhymes, and some short sentences written in pinyin by the end of this term. Sending/Receiving PE and Students will investigate the properties of a variety of objects, including a Games range of balls. They will explore rolling, throwing, stopping and catching. The Overview lessons will involve a lot of fun games and activities that will encourage the students to develop their catching and throwing skills. Mrs Jo Tuck, Chasing Games Miss Siobhan Crowley, Mr Jon Dodging, spatial awareness and tactics are important in many sports. In this Christie unit the students will learn, and be asked to play, a wide range of exciting games that will require them to use all these skills and develop them. Movement In this unit students will investigate the fundamentals of body management. Students will explore all types of movement. They will investigate types of travelling; from walking on feet to rolling. The students will also explore balance and the transfer of weight. Mrs Anna Hogan Swimming The aim of this unit is to introduce students to the joys of swimming by developing their confidence and technique in the swimming pool. Absolute beginners and nervous swimmers will have the opportunity to increase their confidence, buoyancy and basic body management in the water. More experienced and confident swimmers will be able to develop their water skills and stroke technique. All students will improve as swimmers while as the same time developing a love and enjoyment of the water in a safe and secure environment.
