Voice Proficiencies
Voice Class 1
Repertoire and Literature
As assigned, you will learn four pieces and prepare them for performance in class and your midterm and
final examinations.* The pieces do not need to be memorized. Two of the pieces must be from the
“Traditional Songs” or “Art Songs” sections of the required textbook. Pieces are to be early- to-midelementary level—equivalent to those in beginner’s books such as:

Vocalises
•
Basic vocalises will be assigned.
•
Vocal function of each vocalise must be demonstrated and understood.
•
Students will create one vocalise each, demonstrating the exercise in class and demonstrating
written understanding of its purpose.
Writing Assignments
•
Students will demonstrate their ability to clearly and articulately communicate about musical
values and expressions.
•
Students will demonstrate self-analysis of vocal qualities utilizing the given rubric.
•
Students will complete an emotion/imagery plan for each chosen song in order to develop and
refine their musical communication skills.
•
Students will analyze techniques of professional singers and styles, demonstrating
understanding of the many ways in which the vocal instrument can be used.
•
Students will complete a written exam at both mid-term and final, assessing their knowledge
and understanding of how the vocal instrument functions.

•
Students will demonstrate basic understanding of the tenets of vocal hygiene.
•
Students will demonstrate a working knowledge of the basic anatomy of the vocal instrument.

Repertoire and Literature
As assigned by your instructor, you will learn four classical pieces and prepare them for performance in
class, your mid-term and final examinations. The pieces need to be memorized. All must be classical.
Three must be in a foreign language. They are to be mid-elementary to intermediate level, taken from
the text that correlates to your voice type.
In addition, you must provide a repertory list containing a minimum of 16 works (4 works for each
semester of class voice as specified above). The repertory list must specify works learner, works
memorized and works performed in recital.

Students will demonstrate their ability to clearly and articulately communicate about musical
values and expressions.
•
Students will demonstrate self-analysis of vocal qualities utilizing the given rubric.
•
Students will complete an emotion/imagery plan for each chosen song in order to develop and
refine their musical communication skills.

Students will complete a written exam at both mid-term and final, assessing their knowledge
and understanding of how the vocal instrument functions.
Practical/Performance Proficiency in a Class Recital
Students will perform two memorized pieces of music, one from before 1800 and one from after 1800,
in recital format. One must be in a foreign language. Successful completion of the Class Recital will act as
part of their Voice Proficiency Exam.
