Reserve Firefighter
TWO/TEN Reserve Firefighter Program
APPLICATION DEADLINE

requirement for employment, but you must live within 60 miles or 60 minutes of the fire stations.
SALARY
$10.00 per hour – Probationary Reserve Firefighter
$11.00 per hour – Reserve Firefighter (after completion of one year probation)
$12.00 per hour – Reserve Firefighter Driver Operator Status
DEFINITION
Under supervision to participate in fire fighting and fire prevention activities in protecting life and
properties; to respond to medical emergencies and hazardous materials incidents; to assist in the
maintenance and minor repair of fire fighting apparatus and equipment; to respond to mutual aid
incidents; to participate in fire drills and perform fire fighting and emergency medical technical skills;
and do related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Assigned to a shift, the firefighter receives supervision from the Captain.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES – Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not
limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
 Respond to fire, emergency rescue, first aid alarm, and public service calls, doing jobs that may
include laying hose lines, operating nozzles to direct stream of water on fire, and raising,
lowering, and climbing ladders.
 Operates engine-pumping equipment in a training capacity.
 Assists in conducting salvage and clean-up operations.
 May drive trucks on emergency calls after completing qualifications.
 Operates technical rescue and auto extrication equipment.
 Operates BLS medical equipment.
 Administers patient assessment and treatment at the EMT level.
 Respond and function at a hazardous materials incident.
 Assists in the minor repair, cleaning, maintenance, and testing of fire equipment and apparatus.
 Assists in the maintenance of clean and orderly condition in and about the firehouse.
 Studies and participates in training sessions.
 Participates in fire drills and exercises.
 May be assigned to assist in fire prevention activities.
 Answers general questions from the public.
 May be required to respond to fire calls during non-duty hours.
 Researches and completes project work as assigned.
 Writes reports and correspondence.
 May be required to perform other related or ancillary duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
 The geography of the local area.
 Basic fire fighting functions and techniques.
 Skills of an Emergency Medical Technician.
Ability to:
 Learn technical fire fighting principles and techniques and principles of hydraulics applied to fire
suppression.
 Learn the location of hydrants and mains.
 Learn major fire hazards within the community.
 Learn to drive a fire truck with care and safety in accordance with traffic laws and ordinances.
 Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
 Maintain cooperative working relationships.
 Prepare clear, concise, and complete oral and written reports.
 Maintain established standards of physical conditioning.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is
qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
No prior experience is required.
Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Academy or Certificate.
LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATES REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION SUBMITTAL
 Possession of valid Class C California driver’s license or above.
 EMT Certificate (from any California county or National Registry).
 State Fire Marshal I-200 Certificate.
 State Fire Marshal Confined Space Awareness Certificate.
 CPR Certificate.
 Haz Mat First Responder Operations Certificate.
 Haz Mat First Responder Decon Certificate.
 State Fire Marshal Auto Extrication Certificate (within one year of hire).
 A CPAT card indicating the applicant passed a physical abilities test within the past year.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions:
Work is performed primarily in office, vehicles, and outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including
temperature extremes, during day and night shifts. Work is often performed in emergency and stressful
situations. Individual is exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with fighting fires and
rendering emergency medical assistance, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid
chemicals, solvents, and oils.
The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near
moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or
humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and
vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT
activities when noise levels may be loud.
Physical Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to
handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is
occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The senses of hearing,
tasting, smelling, and the ability to speak may be required to accomplish the tasks associated with
firefighting. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or
move up to 165 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance
vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
SELECTION PROCEDURE
In order to assure maximum objectivity in making the selection, the following selection procedure will be
followed:




All applications will be reviewed and screened to select qualified applicants.
A CPAT card indicating the applicant passed a physical abilities test within the past year.
An oral interview will be administered to the qualified applicants (pass/fail).
A final oral interview will be conducted by the Battalion Chief with the top candidate(s).
