Light therapy has been shown in over 40 years of independent research worldwide to deliver powerful therapeutic benefits to living tissues and organisms. Both visible red and infrared light have been shown to effect at least 24 different positive changes at a cellular level. Visible red light penetrates tissue to a depth of about 8-10 mm. It is very beneficial in treating problems close to the surface such as wounds, cuts, scars, treating infections, trigger and acupuncture points and is particularly effective in collagen production and wrinkle reduction.
New advances in red light therapy show exceptional age defying results. The key to red light therapy is narrowing the wavelength of the light source to between 615-640 nm, with optimal results occurring at 633nm. Studies have shown that repeated exposure to light in this range stimulates the body’s natural production of collagen. Increased collagen production fills in fine lines and wrinkles in the skin which produces the desired anti-aging effect.
The diverse tissue and cell types in the body all have their own unique light absorption characteristics; that is, they will only absorb light at specific wavelengths and not at others. For example, skin layers, because of their high blood and water content, absorb red light very readily, while calcium and phosphorus absorb light of a different wavelength. Although both red and infrared wavelengths penetrate to different depths and affect tissues differently, their therapeutic effects are similar.

As scientific research and medical practice proved long ago, light stimulates healing, reduces pain and has a vitalising effect at different wave lengths. Red collagen light penetrates to a depth up to 10mm under the skin surface and influences cell activity.
These cells in turn have a direct effect on the skin complexion. Many collagen red light equipment and lamp manufacturers have conducted medical studies to determine the required length of the session, and it was found that sessions using phosphor fluorescent lamps are capable of producing far superior results in the same amount of time or less as opposed to using LED’s. Independent laboratory testing using a Spectral
Radiometer found there was up to a 500% increase in energy and performance using phosphor fluorescent lamps over different models of broadband LED’s.
Red light therapy treatments are attractive to clients for many reasons including,
• Stimulate the production of collagen.
• Increase vascularity (circulation) by increasing the formation of new capillaries.
• Stimulate the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the major carrier of energy to all cells.
• Increase lymphatic system activity.
• Reduce the excitability of nervous tissue thereby relieving pain
• Stimulate fibroblastic activity which aids in the repair process.
• Increase phagocytosis, which is an important part of the infection fighting process.
• Stimulate tissue granulation and connective tissue projections aids in the healing process of wounds and tissue.
• Promotes oxygenation, restoring the skin’s natural cellular activity, which keeps the skin renewed and fresh.
Light influences the body in a number of ways, from the simple production of vitamin D, activation of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), serotonin and the encouragement of cell growth and collagen rejuvenation. Using light at a specific frequency triggers a reaction within the body to stimulate receptors in the brain.
Different types of light stimulate diffe rent reactions, and it’s this that formulates the basis for light therapy. In the case of red light therapy the light is designed to stimulate the production of ATP in the mitochondria beneath the skin. By applying the light directly to the skin, the body reacts and the mitochondria release energy which triggers cell production.
This treatment can also address poor circulation by relaxing blood vessels and allowing more blood to pass through. It’s also shown positive results in treating acne, nervous tics, depression and seasonal affected disorder (SAD). There are patients who also attest to the treatment addressing sexual dysfunction too, but there isn’t enough evidence yet to substantiate that claim.
The light emitted by the equipment is of a particular frequency. The photons contained in the light penetrate the skin and causes a reaction in the body. The mitochondria under the skin are stimulated, which triggers energy release and cell stimulation. This reaction causes the body to produce healthy cells at an increased rate which replaces the damaged ones. It is this effect that promotes rapid and more effective healing.
The increased light exposure encourages blood circulation which is known to decrease healing time by speeding up the body’s ability to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the damaged cells.
By assisting the body to do what it does naturally, there are no known side-effects to this treatment. The human body is an amazing organism, and often needs no help from the outside to look after itself. Red light therapy simply promises to aid and encourage the body in recovery. It accelerates the natural healing process to promote faster generation of healthy cells. That’s why it’s regarded as a very safe treatment, and why it’s rapidly gaining supporters in the beauty community.
