The Timberlawn Couple and Family Evaluation Scales (TCFES) are a complete revision of
the Beavers-Timberlawn Family Evaluation Scale. This revision reflects advances in couple and
family research, theory, and practice over the 30 years since the Beavers-Timberlawn was
developed.

The new TCFES contain 18 family scales and 16 scales for evaluating couples. A Global
Competence scale for couples and families is included. The scales and the Rater Training Guide
are written in a clear and detailed fashion to facilitate ease of learning and efficient use.

The Rater Training Guide is a user manual. It Includes material on historical background, theory,
and reliability and validity, but focuses on descriptions of the scales and rating guidelines.
Examples of ways to use the TCFES in clinical practice, research, program evaluation, teaching,
and self-assessment are provided as well.

The TCFES are designed to be used by clinicians or researchers to evaluate couple and family
functioning of patients, clients, or research subjects, but also may be used by the clinician,
researcher, patient, client, or research subject for self-assessment of couple or family relationships
or description and evaluation of one's family-of-origin.
