Parts of this library are currently being catalogued and it is very
important that these procedures are followed so that books are not
misplaced.
●
The collection is shelved following the British School at Athens (BSA) library system,
by subject categories. As there is a non-borrowing policy, the full collection is
theoretically accessible at all times, whether on the shelves or on the readers’ desks.
●
To ensure the minimum disruption to researchers, while maintaining accessibility to
the full collection at all times, the BSA’s shelf place-holding card system is used. When
a reader wishes to take a book to their desk, a shelf place-holding card — which is
blue and can be found at the end of each aisle of books — is to be filled out and put
on the shelf in place of the book. It should record details of the book and the desk
number and the name of the reader. Subject categories are to be found on the shelf
labels.
●
The shelf place–holding card serves two purposes: to indicate to the user where to
replace the book on the shelf and to act as a pointer to the last user if a book is
missing.
●
If a book is not on the shelf, you may approach the current reader and negotiate to
borrow the book from them temporarily and return it to their desk.
●
Once a reader has finished with a book she/he should return it to the shelf, and
remove the shelf place holder, strike through the details concerning that volume and
either re-use or return the card to the end of the aisle.
