Honors Anatomy & Physiology (HAP) Summer Assignment.
Dear 15-16 HAP students,
I'm sure you are looking forward to a relaxing and exciting summer vacation, so am I. HOWEVER, I'd like
you all to get a jump start on the journey through the human body. This summer assignment should take very
little time, unless you wait until the last minute...and then it WILL seem like it is taking forever!!.
It is a 3 part assignment:
Assignment #1 is due by July 20th *Note: If I do not receive assignment #1 by July 20th you may be
replaced by someone on the waiting list. If you do change your mind about taking HAP please let me
know via email so I can let those on the waiting list know..that way they too can get the summer
assignment done.
Assignment #2 & 3 are due the first day of school August 25, 2015
Assignment #1: Contact Information & Personal Profile Due on or before July 20th
Please email the following information to my email address: atomada@srvhs.org Thank you.

What prompted you to enroll in Honors A&P?
Which systems of the body do you already find the most interesting?
Do you have any special needs that I should know about before class starts?
What other Honors or AP classes are you enrolled in for 15-16?
Tell me a little about you, your interests (academic and otherwise), your study habits and your plans for the
summer and future. *don’t write a book…just give me a paragraph.
Assignment #2: Cell Biology and Chemistry Review Due the first day of school August 25, 2015
Below is a list of items you are expected to already know from biology...I won't be covering this during the
school year BUT YOU WILL BE QUIZZED ON IT IN THE FIRST 2 WEEKS OF SCHOOL so it is up to you
to review it over the summer.
a) Please print the list containing I, II and III. Put check marks √ by those you are confident you know. Any of
these you are unsure of you should review. b) You have a couple of options for reviewing this material. (1)
look them up in your old biology notebook or (2) Click the links I, II, and III and move through the tutorials
provided. I encourage you to make some brief notes on each of the items listed below at I, II, and III.
* There will be a quiz sometime the second week of school AFTER WE'VE REVIEWED and discussed the
key points that will be pertinent to your studies of anatomy and physiology the remainder of the year. You
WILL be able to use the notes you took over the summer on this quiz.
Chemistry Basics:
I.

A. General chemistry terms:
1. atom, proton, neutron, electron, ion, chemical bonds (ionic, covalent, hydrogen).
2. What is "molecule"? What "holds" atoms together in molecules?
3. How are electrons important in chemical bonds? What role do they play?
4. What is an ion? How are they formed?
B. Acid/base terminology and the pH scale
1. What is an "acid", "base" and "buffer"?
2. What are neutral, acidic, alkaline pH levels?
3. What is the pH of blood?
II.

A. Structure, properties, functions and examples of cellular macromolecules:
1. Proteins 2. Carbohydrates 3. Lipids 4. Nucleic acids III.
Cell Biology:

A. Identify the "basic unit of living organisms"
B. Plasma membranes
1. describe structure & characteristics - especially phospholipid structure and properties
2. distinguish between "hydrophilic" and "hydrophobic"
3. identify the term "electrochemical gradient"
4. state several factors affecting membrane permeability
5. describe various type of movement/transport of molecules across membrane
a. diffusion, facilitated diffusion, active transport
b. phagocytosis vs. pinocytosis
(see phagocytosis in action)
6. describe osmosis and factors affecting it (focus on hypotonic, hypertonic and isotonic solutions)
B. Major organelles - Know major functions of each:
1. nucleus
2. ribosomes
3. RER and
SER
6.
7.
8.
9.
lysosomes
peroxisomes
cytoskeleton

Assignment #3 Cat Dissection and Coloring Book and Coloring Due the first day of school August 25,
2015
a) Cat Dissection: You won’t actually be dissecting a cat during the summer , HOWEVER since we spend a
great deal of time doing just that, I want to be sure you know what you are getting into. So I am assigning you
to browse through the following link to cat dissection pictures published by Professor Strauss at Penn State
University, https://homes.bio.psu.edu/faculty/strauss/anatomy/biology29.htm. Scroll down to the section titles
"The following links allow the user to view course specimens and dissections. Click to view:" and print one of
the pages (your choice) and hand it in attached to assignment #2. To answer a FAQ: WHERE DO YOU GET
THE CATS?? The cats are obtained from a biological supply company who originally purchase them from the
Humane Society. They are the ones that do not get adopted, most are wild (feral). They are humanely and
painlessly put to sleep and their bodies are sent to one of many biological supply houses for embalming. I
purchase them through the biological supply house. I feel that we have the privilege of learning from these
unfortunate animals, therefore we always treat them with respect, as if it is surgery and not merely
dissection that we perform.
b) Purchase: the "Anatomy Coloring Workbook" 3rd edition by I. Edaward Alcamo, PhD (Princeton Review).
The book can be purchased online through sites like Amazon (make sure you get the correct edition!) or at
Rakestraw Books, 3 Railroad Ave, Danville, CA. Ask for it under the name Angela Tomada. Please CALL
FIRST and do not wait until the last minute, Rakestraw is a small book store and may have to special order the
coloring book for you, which may take a few days! Color the Cell, pages 4 and 5 using special coloring
instructions. You will use colored pencils throughout the year in this class, so if do not have any, it would be a
good idea to purchase some to complete this assignment and many assignments to come in the future!
** Please note: purchasing the Coloring Book is NOT mandatory as the cost of the book should not detour a
student from taking the course, HOWEVER- nearly all pictures on quizzes and tests are from the coloring book
and it is a very good study tool to have, not to mention it is a fantastic reference to take with you, especially if
you plan to continue your studies of anatomy. I will use password protected adobe files (password:
ILoveScience!, password is case sensitive!) to post pictures for those who do not get the book, but paper and ink
for your printer to print these online posts will probably be more costly than the book itself, so these posts will
be meant for students to observe and use to draw their own diagrams as study tools.
Coloring Pages 4-5 pdf
c) Print an assignment tally sheet.
