CRISIS IN PROGRESS…STRANGER ON CAMPUS A “Crisis in Progress” can include a variety of issues including stranger on campus or campus disturbance that requires students and staff to remain indoors until the situation is normalized. The signal for a Crisis in Progress will be an announcement over the PA system of “Lock-Down School”. In the absence of the PA system administration will act as runners to notify staff. If students are in class at the time of the signal: Explain to the students that there is an emergency. Lock the door, turn off the lights, close the curtains, Barricade the doors and barricade a perimeter around the students. Keep quiet! When your room is secure and safe, check your email and turn up the volume on your phone. In an extended emergency updates will be given using the internal intercom system, email, phone or by a runner. If students are not in class at the time of the signal: Assist administration in moving students into the nearest safe building available. Lock doors of rooms if possible and follow “lock down” procedures listed above. Remain with students to maintain order. Keep students in a safe area until advised by administration to move or that there is an all clear signal. Avoid, if possible, large open areas such as the library, student center, gym, lawns or parking lots. An announcement over the PA or by a runner will signal that the crisis is over. Teachers and Instructional Aides are responsible for the safe evacuation of physically handicapped students. Procedure for flood, explosion, chemical accident, animal disturbance, severe windstorm, loss of utilities, bomb threat, fallen aircraft, and war are covered in the Emergency Handbook.
