INFORMATION
for HS APPLICANTS
Courses in Humanities, Social Sciences, Art, Music, Communication, Education
& Liberal Learning Math-Science Courses
Requirements:
 Minimum 3.1 GPA (3.25 preferred). Minimum B+ in courses you want to tutor
 Interview with HS tutoring supervisor to discuss your qualifications and reasons why you want to be a tutor
 Three TCNJ faculty references. For languages, AT LEAST one reference must be from language professor.
 Minimum availability to tutor: 6 hours per week. Maximum TOTAL 15 hrs/wk in ALL campus jobs combined.
 Completion of two semesters at TCNJ by beginning of employment
Preferred Qualifications for HS Tutors:
 Ability to tutor a wide range of courses including languages and/or LL math/science
 Interest in tutoring writing and oral presentations.
Description of HS Tutoring Work:
 Tutoring is offered in weekly appointment sessions, single-session writing conferences, study groups, and
class peer review groups.

Tutoring appointment times may be filled by two or three students from the same course with the same
professor.

Current rate of pay for tutors is $9.25/hour.

Tutors are paid only for hours when they tutor a student, participate in supplementary tutor training, and/or
(rarely) assist with Center administrative tasks. When tutor comes but session is not held because of student
absence, tutor is paid for ¼ hour.

Required tutor training for credit:
— ALL new HS tutors take IDS 292 (Techniques of Tutoring for Humanities/Social Science Services).
IDS 292 meets for 10 weeks, is graded as Pass/Fail, and earns ½ unit.

PAID training sessions:
— Orientation on the evening during Drop/Add week
— Other workshops on occasional evening sessions for specific programs

Application Procedures:
 INTERVIEW: Sign up for an appointment at end of Information Session.
→On the day of your interview, plan to get to your interview at least 10 minutes early. At that time, you’ll be
given a sample student draft to read for the interview.

APPLICATION FORM & QUESTIONNAIRE:
→Complete all sections HS application form & questionnaire before your interview.
→At least one day before your scheduled interview, return application & questionnaire to
the Tutoring Center Assistant in 101 Roscoe West Hall.

REFERENCES: Complete the top of the reference forms and give them to three TCNJ professors who taught you
in courses that you wish to tutor. The professors can return the forms by campus mail to 101 Roscoe West Hall
or email their references to dgruen@tcnj.edu .
