150 Victoria Doctoral Scholarships

Victoria Doctoral Scholarships – Contribution to Academic Life
within the School of Psychology
During the term of their Victoria Doctoral Scholarship, each recipient1contributes 150 hours
per annum to the academic life of the School. The purpose of this contribution is to enhance
the student’s professional development as an emerging researcher and teacher, by
providing the student with experiences typical of those carried out by practicing university
academics within the School of Psychology and the wider University. It is anticipated that
each recipient will gain and develop new relationships and skills that will last far beyond the
duration of the scholarship.
Students’ overall contribution should involve activities that will develop them into wellrounded scholars. It may take a variety of forms, such as working as a teacher or tutor,
research assistant, or assisting in other aspects of the running of the school. Over the
duration of the scholarship, the combined plans and activities carried out should show
progression both in breadth of activities and in skill levels.
When the student first enrols, the student and supervisor draft a plan to cover the period
between enrolment and the next due date for the 6 monthly report (May and November each
year). The plan should include a range of activities (e.g., at least one activity from three of
the six categories listed below). Once the PGC has approved the initial plan, a contract is
drawn up between the student and the Head of School. Students are then responsible for
keeping a log (see below) of the activities carried out and hours spent, as they work through
them, including any additions or changes that occur, with a comment on any substantial
deviations from what was planned.
After the period covered by the initial plan has been completed, the student and supervisor
will draft a new plan (i.e., set of activities with indicative hours for each) for the following six
months, for the duration of the scholarship.
The student will then attach to each six monthly report the plan and log of work done for the
previous period (usually six months) and a new draft plan for the next 6 months (see
appended template). Logs and plans are to be signed off by a supervisor prior to submission.
