New York State Diploma Requirements and Options
New York State has several diploma types, some of which are limited to particular situations, and other that require work above and beyond the basic Regents diploma. The specific types are clearly defined at the following link: http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/gradreq/diploma-credential-summary.pdf
For all diploma types 22 credits of specific coursework is required including: 4 units of ELA, 4 of Social Studies, 3 Science, 3
Math, 1 Arts, 1 Language other than English, 2 Physical Education, ½ Health and 3.5 electives. 5 assessments are also required: 1 math, 1 ELA, Global History, US History and 1 Science with a score of 65 or higher. This awards a student a
Regents diploma .
A Regents diploma with Honors is all of the above requirements with all exam scores with a computed average above 90
A Regents diploma with Advanced Designation includes all requirements for a regents diploma with the addition of 2 addition units of LOTE or a 5 unit sequence in CTE or the Arts. In addition, 8 regents exams are required with a score of 65 or better as follows: 3 math,2 science, ELA, Global History and United Stated History and Government as well as the Checkpoint
B exam for LOTE or the 5 unit sequence in CTE or Arts.
A Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors is awarded when a student meets all requirements for the
Honors diploma and all 8 required regents exams have a computed average above 90.
Other diploma types include a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with an annotation denoting Mastery in Math or
Mastery in Science if all 3 Regents exams are above 85 in the discipline.
A Local diploma option is available to students who complete all requirements for the diploma and may either have an exception to the 65 required passing score on exams either through appeal, as noted on an IEP or 504 plan.
Career and Technical Education Endorsement can be earned on a Local, Regents, Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation
(with or without Honors) by completing all requirements for that diploma type as well as completing an approved career and technical program and passing the technical assessment for their CTE discipline.
